747 real world operation

A question for the real world pilots amongst you.Is it practicable, in a real world 747 for the outboard fuel tanks to supply the engines on the respective wings and for the inboard fuel pumps to remain switched on , showing low pressure (tanks empty), for an extended period without damage? The reason I ask is if I leave the "Queen" running overnight on a long haul trip, when it comes time for "tank to engine", I am tucked up in bed!Just wondering.John

Real world pilots don't get to sleep while pilot in command (or at least will never admitt it). You won't break the sim, if that is what you mean, if your procedure is realistic then the answer is an obvious no.

No - I didn't mean would I break the sim - I wondered if I would break the airplane if it was done in real life!Anyway - another post tells me that the APU is supplied from Tank 2 - so with this empty - the APU could not be started. It was probably a frivolous question and one which maybe I shouldn't have asked.RegardsJohn

I don't know about the 747 but in general, fuel pumps use fuel as lubricant, so as long as fuel goes through them, they are fine running continuously, but if there is no 'low pressure cutout' or anything like that, they will start to ingest air, and that will cause damage over extended time.

Just a little trick you can do when you return to the sim, go to the PMDG fuel options/setting page and (re)select the currunt fuel on board. Then the PMDG logic will automatically distribute fuel in tanks as they should be, and also correctly set all fuel pumps.Subin.
