August 25, 200223 yr Hi to all PIC767 pilots, having just got my 767 and merged it with the POSKY model I shut everyhing down to see if i could start it from a cold cockpit. I thought i had followed all the checklist items in order but i must be doing something wrong because the the crt panels will not light up and when i start the apu i don't hear a peep? is this normal? can someone give me a hand with the start up procedures (this is definitely no Cessna 172!!)
August 25, 200223 yr You can't hear the APU in PIC - as it's in the back of the plane I don't think you'd be able to hear it from the cockpit in the real thing either. It also takes a bit for the APU to start, so the CRT screens will stay dark for a while.Cheers,Gosta.
August 26, 200223 yr Also, make sure that the APU Gen switch is engaged on the overhead panel or the APU won't supply power to the busses.
August 26, 200223 yr Hey guys,It's correct, you cannot hear the APU from the cockpit. It normally takes roughly two to three minutes for the APU to come up to speed and power the busses....and Philip is correct, if the APU GEN switch is not in the "ON" position, then nothing will happen. Also, we do what's called a "safety check" before we power any busses with either the APU or External power (in other words...a dark cockpit). We check to be sure that the Battery Switch is "ON", the Standby Power Switch in is the "Auto" position, the ELEC HYD pumps are "OFF", the LANDING GEAR lever is down, and finally the ALTERNATE FLAPS switches are NORMAL and OFF. This is to preclude moving any flight control and/or landing gear doors inadvertantly possibly injuring someone. later,Capt. August 27, 200223 yr Cap'n,Along those lines of 'noise', I was wondering how much engine noise can you actually discern on the flight deck during various flight phases? I've heard it's actually slim to none!
August 27, 200223 yr t,Actually, you hear more "white" noise (mostly airnoise across the windscreen) when at cruise. You can definitely hear the engines when you're adding power taxiing around, etc. Also at the beginning of the take-off roll, you can hear that wonderful sound that Misters Pratt and Whitney have invented. For the most part, Boeing makes rather loud cockpits, while Airbus, (and esp McDonnel Douglas) make quiet ones. In the DC-10 cockpit, one could hear a mouse pass gas....hehe.BBall---------------------Capt. William "BBall" BallBoeing 757, Northwest AirlinesSenior Editorwww.frugalsworld.com
