August 19, 200322 yr Returning to what the forum is really about, I invite you to join me in posting interesting PIC questions without the answer initially supplied. Lets get back to some procedure sharing and turn this forum back on track. I will start by replying to my own post, with the "Subject" changed to allow a series of topics to covered within one thread. If it gets too long and bytey with screenshots, we can start another, and another.NOTE: Some of the lessons learned in this thread will be very helpful on the BBall PIC flight. These are some of the surprises you can expect.
August 19, 200322 yr On initial contact with approach on your departure, the controller tosses you a curve ball and totally changes your expected departure.AAL327 climb maintain 15000, turn left heading 240, intercept the 020 radial and fly that inbound, then proceed direct What do you do and in what order?Resized screenshots welcome
August 19, 200322 yr Commercial Member I'd do it like this:1. HDG SEL to 240, MCP ALT to 15000, VNAV engaged2. FMC LEGS PAGE - ENTER in LSK 1L, ENTER 020 for INTC CRS in LSK 6R. ENTER in LSK 2L. EXEC changes, arm LNAV for the intercept. You could also insert a disco after if you were expecting vectors back to the planned route after the fix...Ryan Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
August 19, 200322 yr Good one Mike.On initial contact I'm still handflying the bird with MCP sending data to the Flight Director. Chances are I'm using FLCH as well in my climb to initial altitude. Can I remember how to do this off the top of my head - having not flown the PIC for a month now? Let's see.1) Reset MCP Altitude to 15,000.2) Turn Heading Select to 240 and make sure I engage HDG SEL.3) Check that I have a good speed set in MCP and FLCH engaged.4) Yank, Bank, Trim, etc. accordingly5) Bring up FMC - go to FIX type in and type in "020"6) Click on LEGS - enter the click LSK1.7) Click the corresponding LSK for then click LSK2.8) Click enter. 9) Intercept the -020 and fly it inbound10) Replot my course to 11) Engage LNAVRyan's method looks 1000 times easier - but for some reason I know that I could complete mine in a matter of seconds.
August 19, 200322 yr Commercial Member Thanks Mike, Tabs and Ian. August 19, 200322 yr Then you'd be flying course 020 on the 200 radial. Radials are numbered by their outbound course.Inbound on the 020 radial is INT CRS 200.Lee Hetherington (KBED)
August 20, 200322 yr OK, good stab at it everyone. Lee caught the mistakes that trap most people who do not practice this procedure. The 020 radial is indeed the 200 inbound. You have to recognize that the reciprocal has to be entered when flying this procedure. Here is the way I would do it, not necessarily the only way to handle it in PIC.(Note that I was guessing at the headings and radials when I posted this today. After loading up the sim to take screenshots I realised that a better example might have been used. This example requires a very extended initial departure heading at 5000 to make this work. None the less, I used my posted numbers in the example to be consistent.)After departure from KLGA bound for KGSP you have leveled off at 5000 per the LGA9 departure on an assigned heading of 350. You are expecting a vector for a left turn direct BIGGY to join the airway and get on your way. The departure controller tosses you a curve ball and says this:AAL327 climb maintain 15000, turn left heading 240, intercept the Solberg 020 radial and fly that inbound, then proceed direct BIGGY Engage APSet MCP ALT 15000Set HDG 240Push SEL buttonPush FLCH buttonNote that this is all right to left actions on the MCP and can all be done very quickly. Now the jet is on AP and you have a minute or two to sort out what you are doing next.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/31901.jpgOn the FMC LEGS pageEnter SBJ in the scratchpad and then LSK L1Enter 200 in the scratchpad and then LSK R6 to set the reciprocal for the 020 radial as the inbound intercept course for SBJHit LSK 3L then LSK 2L to move BIGGY to clean up the LEGS pagehttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/31902.jpgVERY important step as the training aids say, Push EXECPush LNAVControl clears you to FL350Reset MCP altitude to 35000Push VNAVhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/31903.jpgNow all the work is done and you can wipe that persperation off your forehead as the jet turns to intercept the radial.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/31904.jpgAnd a real appreciation sets in for the capabilities of the 767PIC as the turn for BIGGY begins.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/31905.jpg
August 20, 200322 yr You have your clearance for taxi to Rwy 30L and are told to follow the Air Canada 767 on Bravo, you are number 2 for departure. Then 2 other aircraft are insturcted to taxi, number 3 and 4 for Rwy 30L. As you start to turn in behind the Air Canada, ground advises you of a routing change. Original clearance was as follows,KSTL OZARK3 HLV DRIVL J24 SLN J102 ALS J44 FMN J64 CIVET CIVET4 KLAXNow the ground controller advises,KSTL LINDY2 VIH BUM J110 FMN J64 CIVET CIVET4 KLAXOMG, how do you handle this in the next 2 minutes and taxi at the same time? Remember Forum Rules for Screenshots, 800x600 pixel size
August 20, 200322 yr No problem here - I'll taxi while PNF reprograms the FMC:( great posts Mike, I'll add some later when my eyes are fully opened...IlanP.S. - Mike I still owe you an answer on PIC on VATSIM - just arranging some final info...
August 20, 200322 yr And here's another sweet approach: This is a VOR approach to my current homebase, LLOV (Ovda airport, Israel). You are Descending 5000' to NURIT, now 25nm out. You are too high due to late descent (opposite traffic, damn J10 route) and won't make it to 5000' over NURIT. You are cleared for the VOR straight-in approach (rwy 20R).How will make it, starting from initial setup.See the jepp chart below - note the final approach track offset, and go around procedure.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/31916.jpg
