Getting started controlling

Recommended Posts

Guest PhilipManwaring

Greetings all. Could some kind soul please point me in the right direction to get started controlling on VATSIM? I've really enjoyed flying on VATSIM and would love to be able to "give back" a little by controlling a sector from time to time. Thanks and happy flying,Philip.

Hi Philip:Controlling will open up a whole new world for you. While it involves aviation (which you no doubt love since you are a flight simmer), its different from the pilot side and offers different satisfaction. There's nothing quite like vectoring an aircraft onto final. :-)I think its great that you want to learn about ATC. The first thing that you want to do is pick an area that interests you. If that area is in the same region that you are presently assigned to then step one is completed. If it is in a different region, then you will have to transfer to the new region.Once you are in the correct region, ask to be assigned to the ARTCC or VaCC that has the area you are interested in. For example, if you were interested in Indianapolis Center, you want to make sure your region is North America and ask to be assigned to Indianapolis Center (ARTCC). No matter where you go, you will have to pass an introductory test so that you can get your Student 1 rating (S1). This test is fairly easy and will require only a bit of study of some basic materials. If you have been flying for any period of time with ATC, then you shouldn't have too many problems with this test.Once you have your S1, you start studying and learning about the procedures of your chosen airspace. The training program is pretty much created by the ARTCC/VaCC. You might be limited in the positions you can work when you first start out but that gives you an incentive to study and get promoted through the ranks. While your contact person varies from region to region, a good place to make your first contact would be the training director. They will be able to point you in the right direction to get started.Good Luck.George S. MarinakisVP Operations (VATSIM6/VATGOV2)VATSIM Board of Governors
