Dumb Yank question about UK...

For some reason, no road map/atlas I have lists/names most towns in UK the way 2k2 does. Froinstance, my map may say "X" but 2k2 calls it "Y". Very confusing having to use Lat/Long charts to know "usual" name of town I'm landing at; wild guess at where taking off from. Is there a map anywhere that uses all the same names?

Hi Peter (and all)I wish you could get this message across to our lovely little Mr Blair (you know the guy I mean, that cuddly little glove-puppet who seems to have taken over from Sooty these days). I keep thinking, why doesn't Saddam Hussein just make a public speech along the lines of "You conceited little twerp, Blair, whatever makes you think that I would be remotely interested in letting off nukes (if I had them!?!) or chemical weapons in your country? I've got better things to do with myself thanks!" ...But wait a minute, what about the hordes of invaders we get from Sangat ... they must know something about dear old blighty, like how to avoid paying the taxes or the parking tickets:-lolBy the way, in answer to the original question, the reply you got was not far off the mark. Many of our airfields were named after the little villages that got obliterated to make way for them, in many cases during the 39-45 war. You'll have trouble locating quite a few of them with any atlas or gazeteer unless it includes the airfield names. But then again, how is one meant to find JFK if you don't know where it is?CheersGerrish

Oi! We've got plenty of villages left. Just take off every time from Middle Wallop, fly VFR over Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, Morton-in-the-Marsh and Ashton-under-Hill and land at Lower Piddle or somewhere. Hi Lizardo,I suppose the simple answer is buy a UK VFR Flight Guide if you wish to attempt to track place names to airport/airfields as shown in FS 2002.But remember we reserve the right to change the names after you have purchased the flight guide and without telling Bill $ Gates or your head man Bush, just a precaution you understand. If anyone starts to lob missiles our way and targeted at Hinton in the Hedge, for example, by changeing its name to say Piddle in the Bog then when the missile lands in wil do no damage to Hinton in the Hedge because due to a quick name change thats not what it is called. I agree Piddle in the Bog would be damaged somewhat but Hinton in the Hedge would be spared. Clever eh???. Ah well back to digging the trenches..........Peter (EGNV)

No wonder Ceasar gave up. haha. You're quite right of course, a chart is much cheaper than the paper and ink and time to print out a very mediocre map. And then too, I could be "officially" lost ;-)...maybe show up on page 3 of The Sun or something being "found". :-)

Lizardo,I drive around a lot and often on that island and always have managed to find my way back to Holland in spite of all the above mentioned trickery... (now you know why they call me Navman ;-) ).
