New Version of the Frontier GMAX CV-580

Recommended Posts

Just a note to let you know that Greg and I have uploaded a new version of the CV-580 with the following improvements:Props now display the pitch visually - you can feather the props by pressing and holding Crtl-F2 and watch them rotate. Flaps deploy as proper Fowler flaps (i.e. slide back), and the flap/nacelle joint has been corrected to 45 degree angle. Airstair handrails now deploy realistically. Props have smooth curved edge, corrected right wing misalignment, pointed the rear fuselage, smoothed rear fuselage, and added view blocks in air intakes, prop spinners, main gear wells, and under stairs. Scissors links are added to the gear, the gear retraction cycle has been altered to match video footage, the nose has been slightly reshaped, antennas have been added, glass has been added to the cockpit, and the airstairs plate reads correctly from the back as well as the front. Nosewheel now steers with the rudder. Added reflective textures, and it is lit at night, albeit subtly, and the virtual cockpit gauges are lit. Altered Greg's original textures to match photos I had. Corrected blue textures showing on bottom fuselage. Greg has added a smoothed wing root too! Original model, animation, panel & textures by Greg Pepper. Modifications by Tom Gibson. It's cv580v2.zip and it's right here at AVSIM.Enjoy!-- Tom GibsonCalifornia Classic Propliners: http://www.calclassic.com/Cal Classic Alco Page: http://www.calclassic.com/alco/Freeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.com/ San Diego Model RR Museum: http://www.sdmodelrailroadm.com/Drop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

Beautiful design Tom and Greg!!!! I am having a bit of pitch occillation at cruise with the AP alt hold engaged (anyone else experience that). Might be the AP gauge assigned to the panel. Though, IMO, the CV580 is more of a "hands on" aircraft vs. new designs. Overall, a definite keeper!Dave

Some people get this, others don't - I assume there is a setting somewhere that affects this. Try increasing the pitch_stability a bit in the aircraft.cfg file - this usually fixes it. It's in the Flight Tuning section.Hope this helps,-- Tom GibsonCalifornia Classic Propliners: http://www.calclassic.com/Cal Classic Alco Page: http://www.calclassic.com/alco/Freeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.com/ San Diego Model RR Museum: http://www.sdmodelrailroadm.com/Drop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___

I'm currently not at home at my fs, so I have to ask... are the textures compatible or will all the repaints have to be done again?Thx for a nice model,TM

Looks like all the repaints will need to be done again.I didnt paint this bird to start with because of lack of reflective textures etc. NOW...I'm gonna dive in. :-)Eric

Hi all! Great looking airplane! I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other CV580 panels out there? I did a search here on avsim and didn't come up with any.Regards,ScottKJMS

Tom and Greg,Your CV580 was fun before but this improved Aircraft is a real TREAT to fly. I really enjoy the airstairs and prop feathering feature along with the other added improvements. I sure hope someone out there can do a repaint of ERA Aviation that is based out of Anchorage Alaska. They have a fleet of about 7 convairs and I see them flying over the house all the time heading out to the bush communities.Again, thanks for such a nice Turboprop, a real pleasure to flyDave

Great plane, guys. Seriously, one of the best. Does anyone know if there is a good sound package that I can find for it? Thanks, Earl

Yes thank you for updating this plane. The old version was one of my favorites. And the new one looks much better. I've got one questions though. I fly exclusivley from the VC, and the cockpit instuments seem a bit out of place. Too modern looking. Is there a chance they could be replaced with ones more appropriate to the planes heyday. I'd be will to do some or all of the work if you could give me some pointers. To those who have previous repaints, you can get the them to work. If you look at the texture folder for the new Fontier livery you'll see two sets of textures. One set has a "_t" appended to the name of each bmp, and the other set has a "_L" on each. I assume the "t" versions are for daylight and the "L"s are for night. I have a favorite livery, namely North Central. I just was put a "_t" (no quotes) on each bmp and it works great.

They will have to be redone, but not completely. If you try to use them right now, you will have a blue texture on the upper part of the airstairs, and the reflectivity and night lighting won't work. Otherwise they should be fine. You'll need to use my version of the spin_prop.bmp file though. For complete compatibility they will need to have the alpha channels added for the reflectivity, based on the pattern of bare metal for your given paint job. They will need to have the windows reshaped to match the new _L night light textures, or have the night light textures fitted to your window pattern. They will need to have the airstairs texture copied from the "left" texture to the "right" texture. You will copy it twice, and then create the lettering for left and right sides (so the lettering reads correctly from both the front and the back). They will need to use my spin_prop.bmp, since it is in an odd format that most programs won't read. I do have a "plain" (no yellow tip) bmp file available from me that is in DXT3/Alpha format which works just fine and can be repainted using normal FS2002 techniques. The alpha channel controls the transparency.Hope this helps,-- Tom GibsonCalifornia Classic Propliners: http://www.calclassic.com/Cal Classic Alco Page: http://www.calclassic.com/alco/Freeflight Design Shop: http://www.freeflightdesign.com/ San Diego Model RR Museum: http://www.sdmodelrailroadm.com/Drop by! ___x_x_(")_x_x___
