A DOUBT ON BITMAPS

Recommended Posts

Guest

Dear friends,I have always been fascinated on bitmaps. How is it that (1) 8 bit stands for 256 colours and 24 bit stands for 16.7 million colours. Is there some formula for the conversion? (2) In image tool, I find that 16 bit stands for 3 different sets of colours. How is that? (3) In Paint Shop Pro (I HAVE VER. 5), we can convert a file to 24 bit before painting. BUT HOW CAN I DO IT IN PHOTOSHOP ( I HAVE BOTH 6 AND 7)Thanks very much for your help.Dr. Jinesh ThomasResident in Internal MedicineGauhati Medical CollegeINDIA

Greetings Jinesh!I have no idea about questions # 2 and 3, but I guess # 1 is a matter of simple mathematics. Two to the eighth power = 256, so I guess (I'm too lazy to work it out - grin!) that two to the 24th power is about 16.7 million. If I'm wrong, I have no doubt it will be duly pointed out to me!Be well.Jaap Verduijn.
