Help! DirectX upgrade killed FS2002 Pro!

Well I knew I shouldn't but I just HAD to upgrade to DirectX 8.1. BIG MISTAKE! I can no longer run FS at all. Now I get an error message that "Microsoft Flight Simulator requires DX8a or higher. Please reinstall Microsoft Flight Simulator". I forgot to install DirectX in Safe Mode the first time and did it from normal mode. So I then did an install again from Safe Mode but I still have the same problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled FS2002 Pro but the problem is still there. It WILL NOT RUN! There is nothing else I can find on the MS knowledge base about this problem. So now what? Is there any way to fix this? Any registry keys I need to tweak?System: PIII 800 with 128mb running Windows 98SE. Radeon 7500 AGP video card.

Your video card probably doesn't support the new DX.

Hello Ed,I do not hope it is necessary for you, but if yourinstall is a bit old (several months, maybe) or a greatdeal of installing and uninstalling have taken place,maybe your registry is messed up. Either clean it witha cleaner util, or perhaps even better, "D check" yourwindows intall and get things anew. Can work wonders!-Niels Christiansen

Crashdogg, I had a similar problem a while back. Try this.Start -> run -> dxdiagClick Display tabClick "Test Direct 3D" buttonRun the tests. Make sure they ALL pass.If one fails, disable "Direct 3D Acceleration" then re-enable it. Run the Direct 3D tests again.They should pass now and FS2002 should work.For some reason when I upgraded my DirectX version once, this same thing happened. Max Payne wouldn't launch, saying it required a DirectX compatible video card. I did a search one the failed Direct3D error code online and found many discussions of this.Hope that works!
