Stupid Question About Fuel Tanks.

Recommended Posts

Guest Bob I

Hi,Not a stupid question at all, cuz they are all different. A Lockheed C-5A/B has four main tanks, two aux tanks and two extended range tanks. At standard day conditions, that's a gas load of 318,000 pounds.Layabout

I am not sure anyone can answer this question with a single answer. Every plane is different. It depends on the Make/Model/dash number ect...Just as an example the Falcon 20 that I flew with the Coast Guard officially had 5 tanks, left and right wing, left and right feeder, and aux tank. The wing tanks alone comprised of 3 or 4 tanks per side, depending on model so techinically speaking we had 9-11 actual fuel tanks onboard. And this was only a Biz Jet converted for military use. So as you see fuel systems in aircraft can get very complex and the bigger the plane the more complex they can get. http://www.ktone.org/images/FSD_ken.jpg

hi there...for the 747 for example , Fuel is carried in four main tanks inside the wings and a center tank between the wings. No. 1 main tank is connected to No. 1 engine, No. 2 main tank to No. 2 engine, No. 3 main tank to No. 3 engine, and No. 4 main tank to No. 4 engine while the center tank is connected to all four engines. Electrical boost pumps in the tanks provide positive fuel pressure to the engines... Henry. CYXT

the 747-400 and e.g. the md-11 even carry fuel in the horizontal stabilizers... the so-called "wet tail"as mentioned before it indeed all depends what aircraft you are talking about..
