Any chance for icing on the cake?

Recommended Posts

As snow begins to fall outside I keep wishing for "someone", preferably a genious, to come up with a way to simulate the effects of icing on wings, props etc as a complement to that good old pitot icing. I guess it

Airframe and Prop icing is already simulated within FS2002. Have you tried it? Set temps to freezing, create a cloud layer and enable ICING IN CLOUDS. Get in the 172 then fly through the cloud for approximately 10 minutes. Your performance will decrease and drag will increase. Accumulation is also simulated - the more ice you have accumulated, the longer it takes to dissipate when you are out of icing conditions. If you remain in icing conditions for too long, eventually you will not be able to maintain altitude.Unfortunately there is no way to tell if you have icing or not except for noticing the performance/drag changes over time. If you use ActiveSky 2002 and enable FSUIPC's RANDOM ICING IN CLOUDS, then you will be experiencing plenty of icing in the proper conditions.. but, you may never know you had it. It is obviously much more noticible in lower-performance aircraft.-Damian Clark

Hope to see things like this in future versions of FS! Currently not possible with the available design tools / documentation.-Damian
