Vid card question

Recommended Posts

Guest Tim13

I'm just curious about something. Why dose a Geforce 3 or Geforce 4 vid card that is 64mb provide better performance than a Geforce 2 64mb card?In other words, the 2,3 and 4's are all 64mb cards, yet each one provides better performance as you move up the food chain from 2 to 3 to 4. Why?ThanksTim13

Tim,The graphics card is basically like your PC, it's made up of the PCI card (Acts like a motherboard), a GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) and RAM.It's like the difference between running a Duron (GF2MX) a Thunderbird(GF3) and a XP (GF4).As you know they have diffent cards in each line. Take the GeForce 2 for example: You start off with the GeForce 2 MX, it comes with either 32MB or 64MB of onboard RAM, this is made up using SDRam. Then you have the GeForce 2 GTS, this is basically the same card with a slightly faster GPU and DDR Ram. Then finally comes with the GF2 Ultra, this comes with faster GPU and also DDR Ram, but the RAM is slightly faster. As newer cards come out, their GPU is updated and made faster, also RAM differs from card to card.Hope this makes sense and helps a little :)
