Video driver recommendation please

Recommended Posts

Guys, I need a recommendation on an Nvidia video driver. I bought a new Nvidia 7600 GS card with 512MB today which was a substantial upgrade from my old Nvidia 4800 Se card! In any case, I have downloaded and installed the current WHQL approved Nvidia drivers, 93.71. They run ok, but flash some and are slightly jerky. I was wondering can anybody tell me which drivers might run the most stable for this card? Also are there any specific settings I ought to put into the cfg files for FS9 (which is all I will run...dont like FSX.)?ThanksEric

Hi Eric,Have a look here since there is no "best" driver so just alot of trying out various ones http://www.tweaksrus.com/index.php?option=...docman&Itemid=1 those are tweaked drivers, and have for me always given better performance and the least issues over the official nvid releases. And as for the cfg here's mine maybe that works for you too.DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX by TweaksRUs.0Mode=1280x1024x32DISPLAYUPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=32TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=400TERRAINTERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=96.000000TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=3TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=0TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=9.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=4.50000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=5Hope thats of some help.

There are a few more things to look at with that new AGP card...first, its probably worth revisiting your AGP aperture size set in the BIOS. Second, make sure you have loaded the latest (currently Oct 2006) DirectX 9c from the Microsoft support website...preferably prior to installing your video drivers.Last, if you did not use a cleaner utility like Nasty File Remover (available from www.Guru3D.com) to delete all the remnants of your old nVndia drivers, I suggest you use the control panel, uninstall your current driver, reboot (and do not allow WinXP to search for or install a new driver when prompted), run the file cleaner, reboot again (again do not allow WinXP to try to find a driver) and then run the driver installation. This'll make sure you don't have a piece of the old drivers still mucking up your new drivers for your new fast vid card.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300Santiago de Chile

Thanks Bob.I did make the BIOS changes to change my AGP aperture to 512 from 128 (old card). I also changed my AGP speed to 8x. I did this after checking for an ASUS bios update (there was one) on my mobo.Good info and reminder on the cleaning of old drivers too!Eric
