How to fit new cooling heatsink/fan onto CPU.

Recommended Posts

I have an AMD 4800+ X2 that I would like to experiment with overclocking, but would first like to try a better cooling solution. I have the stock AMD cooler using the stock gunk that comes with the CPU kit. Firstly, what's the best way to remove the existing gunk from the CPU, or is it even possible? Secondly, I have an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe. Any good cooling solutions recommended for this CPU/mobo combo?I have never tried water cooling and know little about it. Would this also be an option?Thanks- Bruce.

Hi Bruce,Rubbing alcohol or use some nail polish remover, those will safely help you get rid of the old thermal grease. As to overclock experimenting, water cooling is nice but can be a bit expensive if your a first time clocker, all in one kits can be found cheap but they aren't great, more a waste of money. If your a firsttimer, get yourself an all copper cooler by Zalman like the CNPS9500 or have a look at a Scythe Infinity, those two rank as one of the best air-coolers out on the market right now. After that, read ALOT and start of with small increments, after you master it somewhat you can always go water.Good places to start: http://www.overclock.net and http://www.extremeoverclocking.comUsefull tools,SuperPi: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=36A64Tweaker: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=106StressPrime: http://sp2004.fre3.comMy tip, READ as much as you can , read again..and again.. then try and test.. Go slow, and dont try too high to start of with, keep checking your temps as your on your way and keep the MAX temp under load below 65c/149F.PS: as to the coolers, check the space in your case, since some have pretty large dimensions
