331 Layers IS the limit in SCENERY.CFG, FS2002

Recommended Posts

After much muckin' about, shiftin', sortin' and fiddlin', I can confirm - having seen many exploratory posts on this issue in the past, including my own - that the limit for 'layers' in the SCENERY.CFG file in FS2002 is 331.After that, new entries simply don't appear."Area" numbers don't seem to matter and, certainly, don't need to be the same as "layer" numbers. So if you've more than 331 scenery folders or entries, you'll need to consolidate, or have different SCENERY.CFGs for different regions, perhaps. If you knew all this, good for you, but I've never seen the definitive number to date. Hope this helps some of you.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/cxkaitak.htmlhttp://www.swiremariners.com/reds.htmlhttp://www.swiremariners.com/cxkaitakv3.jpg

Hi Mark, good info to know. Ran into a problem this evening installing Bill M.'s Pago Pago scenery, and I have all of his and have had no problems with any of them.Installed the scenery okay and in the readme file was an Exclusion line to be copied in to the scenery cfg file but when I went to paste it got a message saying that windows didn't have enought memory to do this and to quit some applications and retry, I don't have anything else running?? Even went in and unchecked eveything in the start up menu and still wouldn't let me do it. Finally sent the scenery cfg file and the readme to a friend and he was able to do it.After reading your post I went in and checked mine to see what I had.going into the sim and the scenery library I'm showing 259 entries. In the scenery cfg file 272 areas and 259 layers. So any idea what might have caused this?http://www.enter.net/photoalbum/data/reddog/905260.jpgSceenshots and Pics athttp://community.webshots.com/user/reddog18951USMC Retired

How do you guys get so much scenery? I'm at about 130, and probably won't be going over 200 anytime soon.

Hi Chien RougeI'm no expert in such matters, but I am pretty sure from my experience that the error message you got there was nothing to do with FS. Did you try rebooting at the time? When I get those 'out of memory' messages, it's usually because my computer wants a beer. A reboot usually cracks it.You're fine with what you have in your SCENERY.CFG right now ... should be no problem at all. As I said above, "area" numbers don't cause any hassles ... mine run as high as 385 or something, having deleted several sceneries over the past year ... but the number of layers you have is well below the magic 331.To answer you, Stratus ... dang, I just don't know. I see a pretty scenery, and I just have to take a look at it. There's so much marvellous work about, and much of the freeware stuff is streets ahead of the payware. I must have 500 in FS2002, many consolidated under author names, etc. I don't get to use some of them more than once or twice though! But, I love to have the variety. Not for me the same old milk run every night. Now for a quick spin around the South Island of NZ ...Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/cxkaitak.htmlhttp://www.swiremariners.com/reds.htmlhttp://www.swiremariners.com/cxkaitakv3.jpg

ive allways been looking for the right terminology to explain the "out of memory" question, and now you come up with the best ive ever heard. :D>When I >get those 'out of memory' messages, it's usually because my >computer wants a beer. A reboot usually cracks it. hmmm....i think the dummyanswer would be: "last week i emptied a whole six-pack over my PC. it didnt work" :D
