Mid Hour METAR Updates

Recommended Posts

Guest Murf

When partial (mid-hour?) METAR updates are used they often do not contain temperature or pressure updates. For example:CYHZ 051426Z 34012G17KT 15SM FEW030 BKN060 OVC150 RMK CF1SC6AC2This results in a temp of 15 C and 29.92 IN HG readings in flight sim. These reading are often quite unrealistic as it is about -5C at CYHZ right now. Would it be possible in a future update to have AS2004.5 use the temp and pressure from the previous full (top of the hour) METAR data? Thanks,

Here is an even better example...CYHZ 051450Z 34012G17KT 10SM -SHSN FEW030 BKN050 OVC080 RMK CF2SC5AC2It's snowing and +15 C in Flight Sim.:-)

As noted in a number of other posts I have made previously on this subject, what you are seeing is the fact that for some Canadian reporting stations (usually those with manual observations), when a SPECI is generated at a time other than the hourly METAR, they will sometimes not include all the information. Most commonly this is altimeter setting and temperature/dewpoint values. For all values which ActiveSky does not get in the SPECI, it utilises the standard temperature and pressure values. This can cause some strange changes such as instant altitude jumps.I too have suggested that the developers investigate ways to maintain previous METAR values (if available), and they said they would think about it.

Hi,Yep all true as Jim says, we are working on this issue at the moment. Due to the "real-time" design of AS2004.5 it is proving a bit of a challenge. We simply didn't anticipate the need to restore old data bits from old METARs. It actually must be solved at the server collection and storage level, which takes a bit of work. But we are getting there! We are also working on a more temporary solution which uses relevent nearby current data to replace the missing value. Won't always be right, but will be much better than defaulting to 15/7 and 29.92. More news on this shortly..Thanks all..
