ASV weather over departure airport

Featured Replies

When I takeoff from an airport, like KVNY, and I have ASV all loaded up and ready to go, I will get the Metar, and the weather will be reasonably similar in terms of visibility, but never in terms of cloud cover. The overcast layer, which is currently at 300 overcast at VNY, is nowhere to be found. But, then I found something interesting, I take off, and I fly around the airport, all the way up to 10,000 MSL in a Cessna. The reported weather is all around the airport, but there always seems to be a big "hole" where the weather is clear, etc. But, everywhere else around it, the weather is what is reported.I do not have anything suppressed or any zones set.

I was going to load a picture of Van Nuys from 8000 feet in Fs9 but it is too big. You can see the beacon on, which means that it is IFR at the airport. The Metar was 3sm 300 OVC. But, there is a big hole around the airport. There is weather all around, both overcast, as well as cumulus, etc. But, there is nothing all around the airport and teh aircraft. In fact here was the Metar just after it KVNY 141451Z 16003KT 2 1/2SM BR BKN007 17/15 A2981Even with BKN, rather than OVC, you still get 80% coverage. There is nothing anywhere around the airport!CB
