Rate of change of winds & windshear

Featured Replies

Hi - Thanks for a great product, makes simulation flying so much better - well done. One question to do with the rate of change of winds. There was a large storm in Sydney today, and flying there were three levels of winds virtually all opposite directions to each other. ASV seems to change the wind direction at about 10 deg per second max. How does ASV generate windshear (or rapid violent changes in wind direction)? Is this configurable, as I was trying to test windshear notifications, which can be triggered in FS9.1 by setting similar winds up and the shear strength to high. I have tried configuring my own TAF reports and metar strings with the WS prefix, and other weather to no avail, and have tried both FSUIPC wind smoothing and disabling it. I hope this is not a stupid question, Thanks for a great product, Stuart

Hi Stuart,Thanks for the words!Using the "Use FSUIPC wind smoothing" option, wind speed is smoothed a default 5deg or kts per second (configurable via FSUIPC registered options, fixed 5kts/deg with unregistered version). This facility helps prevent large unwanted changes and unfortunately prevents extreme wind shear as there is no way to currently distinguish between "wanted" and "unwanted" shear... Such unwanted shear is a side-effect of the FS9 wind depiction system which can lose correct direction through faulty interpolation logic, causing major flight performance changes even when no actual shear conditions exist. In short, you could disable the wind smoothing option (as well as DWC, which also smooths winds to a certain degree) and live with the unwanted shear if desired, but this isn't really an acceptable solution for most users. As for the future, it would be possible to enable a wind shear effect along with the smoothing, but its not something we've really had requested... if there is enough demand we will certain consider working on this! All feedback welcome..Best,

If it's not a difficult undertaking, it would certainly add to the realism.----------------------------------------------------------------John MorganReal World: KGEG, UND Aerospace Spokane Satillite, Private ASEL 141.2 hrs, 314 landings, 46 inst. apprs.Virtual: MSFS 2004"There is a feeling about an airport that no other piece of ground can have.
