AS6 Incorrect Depiction Of METAR Report

Featured Replies

To whom it may concern,I have been having problems getting AS6 to accurately depict the METAR string. When there is only one high altitude cloud layer being reported by the a local weather station, sometimes AS6 likes to generate at least 2 cloud layers. The other day, there was a single cirrus cloud layer being reported at 25,000 feet over Las Vegas. Upon updating AS6 and entering the simulator, there was an additional cumulus layer hanging out over the mountains at around 17,000 feet. Thinking this may be due to an error in local wx station reporting (as there was no real-world cloud layer at 17,000 feet at the time), I fetched the local KLAS metar string, which clearly showed 1 cloud layer at 25,000 feet, and forced it into the Wx configurator, setting a range of 100nm. I also attempted the same while including a check box in "Apply to ALL locations instead of specific station/range". AS6 accepted this and told me all stations were updated, and that automatic updates had bee disabled in order to make it so. So everything seemd to be working.Upon entering the simulator and allowing time for the weather to load in, however, ... walah! - there, at about 17,000 feet, was the 2nd cloud layer hanging out over the mountains!I don't want a 2nd cloud layer at 17,000 feet hanging out over the mountains!! :-p lolAny ideas what might be causing this? Thanks.-SK

If I may jump in here...(always looking to learn more about fs weather)Could it also be ASV6 showing weather at a distant station?I think I have noticed this behavior in the sim before.Rhett

Thanks for the response, Jim.The problem with disabling upper layer generation is that it leaves me with no cirrus layer and only cumulus clouds... and at a lower altitude than is being reported in the METAR string.Any other suggestions? Thanks.SK

Hi Jim...Yes, both are off. Only things checked in that column are "Overcase Enhancement" and "Add Rain With TS Reports". Doesn't seem to make sense... I can't imagine what's causing it.Hey - could it have anything to do with system time/date vs flight sim time/date?Under "Dynamics", I have checked:"Use System Time (vs FS Time)""Automatic Timezone Detection"I almost always reset the FS time to June 21 of this year in order to enable the earliest date of Summer, as I have a bunch of photoscenery activated that only works during the summer season. Could this be causing a problem? I seem to remember seeing something here about some type of issue regarding FS time/date way back in V4.5.Thanks,SK

>Hi Steve,>>That should be fine. Possible that a nearby station had>influence as the other user suggested?>AHA! So nearby stations DO influence what you see in the sim. I thought so, but thank you for confirming that.Rhett

Hi Jim...As I stated in my initial post:"...Thinking this may be due to an error in local wx station reporting (as there was no real-world cloud layer at 17,000 feet at the time), I fetched the local KLAS metar string, which clearly showed 1 cloud layer at 25,000 feet, and forced it into the Wx configurator, setting a range of 100nm. Jim,This doesn't happen every single time, but much of the time for sure. The only area I fly in regularly enough to notice it as a recurring problem is KLAS.Another thing happened last night, which might be related:Note: TAF Processing was UN-CHECKED.As I have noticed to be the rule, the METAR string being downloaded by the AS6 data source was inconsistent with the real world METAR string. Unknown why - if this is a time-lag issue or what - but I went ahead and grabbed the current METAR report fromhttp://adds.aviationweather.gov/metars/index.phpand placed it into the Wx Configurator, setting a range of 100NM.Upon application, this supressed Automatic Updates and created the desired conditions in the desired area. After flying around the area for about 30 minutes and landing at KLAS, however, I took off from RWY 9L in an F-15, climbing out at about 250kts. At about 7,000 feet the frame rates went down to about 1 frame per 2 seconds - like it was overloaded or something. After about 30 seconds of this, I realized that there was a massive cumulus cloud deck over he area at about 12,000 feet, with a thickness of 2 or 3 thousand feet. I paused the sim and looked at the AS6 window - all appeared as it should, so I refreshed. Upon re-entering the sim again, the frame rates were back up to a normal, almost undetectable rate, but the cloud deck was still present.I circled and landed at KLSV (Nellis AFB), noticing a lack of clouds over the north end of the valley. Upon entering the Weather Options on FS9 and looking at the local station reports, I saw that every station except KLAS was reporting the proper conditions. But KLAS was reporting OVERCAST! The winds and all other conditions at KLAS were as they should be, but not the sky conditions.I attempted to refresh AS6 multiple times, but this wouldn't get rid of the overcast setting. I had to manually alter the setting in the simulator to get rid of the clouds. After that, everything was fine.Ever encountered this type of thing before? Thanks,SK

Hi Steve,No, that's for sure. I did have a case where no matter what, we had a band of permanent clouds over a portion of the Rockies. Even setting everything to clear, caused this.Because it looks like a individual, specific problem, let's use the new system. Write to [email protected] and go ahead and describe the problem. This will lead to a better tracking of this situation.Hope this helps,Jimhttp://www.hifisim.comhttp://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6...development.jpg http://sales.hifisim.com/pub-download/asv6-banner-proud.jpg
