Hurricane Dean - Now on the ASX Radar

Recommended Posts

Guest PilotHeinrich

I took the default LearJet from Kingston toward Dean this afternoon. The wind stayed at 99kts in the eye for me, even though I have updates at the most frequent setting, and spent some time circling about the eye. Nonetheless, it looked fab ---Here we are penetrating the eye:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176972.gifOver the quiet waters:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176973.gifGetting late, time to go:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176976.gifBack into the gusty wall:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/176974.gifThanks so much, ActiveSky X!

Why is the virtual weather station of this hurricane (5S03?) reporting wind speeds of 99KTs? That's a a lot less than the current weather reports say (240kph).I'm running ASX SP1 and the surface wind speeds slider has been set to 200.

Hi Jim,so true hurricane winds are possible in FSX but speeds above 99kts never show up on any reading in FSX itself? And ASX can set weather with windspeeds above 99 and set them in FSX, ok? Is this what is actually happening when I see the ASX metar with 99kts or doesn't the feed ever contain windspeeds above 99?I'd love to experience some rough weather conditions in FSX when flying in a hurricane :)Flying a small aircraft seems to be a bit tame at this moment. I also noticed that the weather station (hurricane) doesn't contain gusts, this could certainly help. Or am I overlooking something?

When trying unsucesfully to land at Kingston Jamacia with the LDS 767 in FSX yesterday, I noted variable winds from 118kts to 135kts in the Navigation display which comes from FSX, so I'm pretty sure the 99kt issue is a reporting/display issue only and that FSX is processing higher winds. At least that's what I'm reading from Jim.

>Hi Jim,>>so true hurricane winds are possible in FSX but speeds above>99kts never show up on any reading in FSX itself?>I believe over 100 knot winds will show up on the A321's wind display...Also in any aircraft, you can fly into the wind or with it, and in the GPS you can see what effect that has on your ground speed. So the winds really ARE over 99 knots, it's just that SHIFT-Z can only display a max of 99 knots.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

So why doesn't ASX itself display the true windspeed? Also shouldn't there be a lot of gusts and turbulence?Wanne.

But why aren't they present in Dean? Or am I misinterpreting the Dean Metar?Wanne.Edit: this is the METAR of Dean:5S03 201447Z VRB99KT 185V355 1SM OVC010 OVC120 OVC220 +RA 20/20 Q0925 RMK DEAN LOC 017.900

I hit 320 knots ground speed per the FS GPS in the realair sf260, indicated was 170 so maybe it does model winds above 99 knots or at least gusts, although this seemed sustained until I changed direction. Ian.

I think that is correct. I surely hit speeds around that on my last flight.I hit some solid speeds - on my way into the ocean that is. :DTook off from Cozumel and it was pretty bad even at the airport. Dean put me into the ground as I tried to close in on the eye in my appropriately named Hawker Hurricane. Heavy, heavy turbulence. But I suppose that is what is supposed to happen. Now to try it again with something more powerful.
