Sperry Autopilot

Recommended Posts

Hi,I believed there were already a lot of questions on how to handle and use this autopilot. I try to understand it by reading the manual but still dont feel convenient in using it. Is there somewhere I could find a step by step manual that describe an example how to operate the AP corectly.ThanksHashhash@cbn.net.id

Hi Hashri,I'm afraid all I know about the Sperry and its use is already laid out in the User's Manual. Since that even includes a reprint of a genuine training manual for the Sperry, I'm not sure what else we can provide for you. If you have some specific questions concerning its operation that are giving you problems I'm sure one of the team or one or more of our experienced users will be happy to try to help you out.You must keep in mind that, as the manual says, it operates very differently from modern autopilots, so try to approach it without any preconceived expectations. But if all else fails, and you just can't stand it, there are a couple options open to you:First, you can turn all three Sperry sensitivity valve wheels to zero and use the standard FS auto-pilot key commands. Second, you can download one of the panel modifications available on our FREE STUFF page that offer a modern autopilot.Bill RambowMAAM-SIM http://www.fssupport.com/maam/hgrsm_blkani.gif

Hash! What are you doing over here! Get back to work! Your DC-3 is gathering dust over at DC-3 Airways! Here's a review of the Sperry written by Charles Wood which is part of the extensive information available on your own site:http://www.dc3airways.com/train_top_2004.htmlHope this helps a little, in addition to the MAAM-SIM manual.MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cx.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/avsimlogo.jpg[/a]

I am going to jump in here; for the past many months I have had an autopilot problem. I wrote it up and got back answers that my problem was procedural. I can say that. after reading the manual several times, that it is not, and with a degree of confidence. I can be in level flight, dead on course, with the heading set as per the manual, turn on the autopilot, and altitude control works as advertized and course control will not hold the course at all. Now the interesting thing here is that when I first installed it worked, I have sinced removed the program and reinstalled, and it still does not work, so it seems to me that there must be a file some where I did not get removed that is causing the problem?

Hi Stalo,Perhaps the SPERRY_MARKIII.cfg has become corrupted. You'll find it in the FS9Gauges folder. If you delete it with FS shut down, it will rebuild when you start up again. Let me know how you make out.Bill RambowMAAM-SIM http://www.fssupport.com/maam/hgrsm_blkani.gif

Hi! Bill:Well I did as you suggested and removed the Sperry_Mark III.cfg. Turned FS back up, took off heading North, leveled at 6K set the course dial to my course, checked artificial horizion to make sure I was level, and turned on the autopilot. Altitude set up,as advertised, and you can adjust the elevator knob, and it responds, however the course knobs did not.I played with both the rudder and the aileron knob with no effect. As I said previous, this use to work great.

StaloHave you made any other modifications to your panel or MAAM-SIM aircraft installation in general? Added another autopilot or anything like that?MarkMark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP Fleet, DC-3 AirwaysTeam Member, MAAM-SIM[a href=http://www.swiremariners.com/cx.html" target="_blank]http://www.paxship.com/avsimlogo.jpg[/a]

Hi! Mark:I have added only two modifications to this sim dcamaam9.zip, and c47_at_9.zip and both of those were installed after the problem started. Some time back I had another DC-3 program, however it did not have an autopilot. When your great DC-3 came along I deleated that sim. I installed your sim, and everything worked, however after having this problem, I though that maybe I had not gotten rid of all the old files and maybe they were corrupting the files, so I did a file search for DC-3 files, and found some left over files from the previous sim,and I deleted them. Following your query today, I did another file search and found DC-3.bak file which appears to be the MS DC-3,some html doc files and DC-3 image files, and all the rest are MAAM's. As far as other aircraft, I have five others, that were installed,I beleave before this one and they have the full blown autopilots that do everything but serve cocktails. the only other sim that has been installed after is a Cessna Citation, and it does serve wine after takeoff to the passenger. ;-)
