Seeking large monitor with great color....Recommendations?

Featured Replies

I've had three SONY or DELL TRINITRONs and loved 'em all. But my 21" TRINI is showing signs of fatigue, has a small mesh rip, and I think I'd like to replace it. I'd like a monitor with deep color saturation capabilities; this TRINI lacked that although it has great flesh tones. Can anybody recommend a really good monitor with great color saturation of 21" or 22" that doesn't cost the moon? Thanks!JS

I recently purchased a Mitsubishi/NEC Diamond Pro 2070SB 23" CRT. It cost roughly $650. It has an incredibly sharp picture with vivid color. It has an input button that allows you to switch between 2 computers, has a 3 mode super bright function which is great for daytime gaming/simming, and a 4 way USB hub on the side. Without a doubt the best monitor I have ever had (or ever seen).. I highly recommend it!Best,Vin

One thing you may try if money is really an issue, Tiger Direct sells refurbished monitors and sometimes they have some really high quality ones listed. I personally have only purchased one for one of my PC's but it turned out to be the best monitor that I have ever owned. I know many don't want to go the refurbished route, in fact I still am leary about it even though I got such a great deal. I looked for a customer of mine the other day and found a nice 19 inch for $106.99, I did not look at what they had in the 21 to 22 inch catagories. Quite a few of my customers choose to go this route to save money and be able to spend more on a better CPU or video card. Anyway that is just an idea for those who need a monitor at a low price. Just a little fun fact to know and share... :-)Dell does not make monitors. They use Sony, Viewsonic, Philips or LG monitors. Part of their vendor arrangement is that these monitor makers provide a specific SKU number for the same monitors they sell directly and mark the black box as "Dell" as a private brand. However, any "trinitron" monitor is a Sony inside. (best IMHO).Eric

Do not pay 650 for a 23" monitor.Do a Google search on computer hardware or go to pricewatch.com and look for CRT monitors.I recently bought a SGI which is a Sony 23" for less than $300 US plus 20 freight from chicago to Lauderdale, MS. It was brand new, overstocked, and they are out there if you are willing to search for them. On the larger monitors, it will be within the next few years that you won't be able to buy a large CRT monitor, as every thing is going to flat screens and LCD's.BestClay

I think Mitsubishi is the best, but instead of buying that I would buy a Formac which is exactly the same but cheaper. If money is no problem I would look into LaCie, outstanding colors.-Mikkel

I also recommend the Mitsubishi-NEC brands. I've only had the 19" but was a great monitor. Hey Vin you have a picture of that monitor with the NG on it? Might be interested in purchasing one myself ;-) Best Wishes,
Randy J. Smith

P M D G's 747-400

coming to a runway near you
Caution! <<>I purchased the Mitsubishi NEC 23" from http://www.provantage.com. Looking at my reciept it was 603.79 plus $49 in shipping. (I was also mistaken, the monitor is 22 inch, not 23.. but hey.. still a monster ;-))Best,Vin

Hey, Clay:Interesting note you posted. That is CHEAP! I mean the NEC-Mitsubishi 2070 is a mean model and cheap at $650, surely, no?How is your $300 monitor? Are you happy with it?JS

I've bought 5 TigerDirect Refurb's (NOT THE OFF_LEASE ONES) so far. Three were 19" ($149), one 21" (NEC at $199), one 17" LCD. They have all been very good and looked absolutely brand new when delivered. All are functioning like new at this time, after about 2 years. My 6 year old 21' Hitachi which I bought at $999 just lost the red gun, so I need another new monitor. I like the currently available NEC Accusync 120/21" refurb (NOT OFF_LEASE) at $269.97. This is cheaper than any repair I might get done, and all the solder joints would be much newer.Of those I've gotten so far, the non_Dell ones appear to be slightly better. The Dell ones in some cases are odd-ball models and the boxes they come in are not as fresh looking. All the others looked totally new, and make me wonder if they are really just "dumped" new stock of some kind since the build dates were very recent to the time I received them.I am now temporarily using the 2 year old 21" (NEC at $199)for FS until I get a new one, and it looks great.Bob (Lecanto, Fl)

Are the LCD's getting any better for flight sim, as far as refresh rates, and reasonable price?

LCD's are not using refresh rates as in a CRT monitor. I would say that, still, you would need to pay a good size of money to get a gaming LCD.-Mikkel

That 2070 is a 22" and in reality 20" like all diamondtrons 22" monitors :). Me having had Sony Trinitrons as well best monitors ever but my 202P40 is actually better. Would recommend that or the NEC FP2141 or D2070 since all three are just about exactly the same.
