9800XT to 6800GT or X800XT ....will it make sense?

"Running out of virtual memory is generally the result of running out of page file availability. I have heard many giving advice to create a static amount of page file; that is, set the minimum and maximum amount of available page file to a fixed value rather than let windows manage the page file. Have you set the page file to a fix amount? If so, reset to "allow Windows to manage the page file" and that should solve your error message."The problem with allowing XP to manage the page file is that the PF will fragment much quicker. While it does no harm to allow XP to manage the file, PF defragmentation should then be a part of routine system maintenance. The easiest way to defrag the PF is to remove it completely, reboot, then reset the desired min and max PF size again.I run a fixed PF (a small one, to boot) and have never had any problems running out of memory with this sim or any other app. If the OS reports running out of virtual memory while flying this sim then the first thing I recommend is to check for errant installs of landclass files and/or a bad AFCAD file. A search of the MSFS forum will yield numerous posts about this issue.Greg

I don't have any errant LC files (I only have my LC files in the FS9SceneryBASE folder. That includes the worldlc file and it includes two LC files from FS Genesis...I assume they are ok in there??) but I did find one odd thing. I found 2 AFCAD files in the same scenery folder for my Simflyers PHX and ATL scenery. Oddly enough, I was getting my computer running out of memory errors at those two airports. Will this cause a memory leak Greg?

"I only have my LC files in the FS9SceneryBASE folder. That includes the worldlc file and it includes two LC files from FS Genesis...I assume they are ok in there??"Should be OK there. Just be sure that you have no other LC that might have been installed improperly by an installer or WinZip (that's why I like installing all my scenery by hand)."...but I did find one odd thing. I found 2 AFCAD files in the same scenery folder for my Simflyers PHX and ATL scenery. Oddly enough, I was getting my computer running out of memory errors at those two airports."You should test without one of those AFCAD files, and then remove it and place the other back in the sim. Bad AFCAD files will also cause CTD's... have you had any of these lately?Greg

No, just the Out of Memory msg when flying into PHX or ATL...once into DEN using the Imaginesim scenery there. I increased my Page file from 1533 to 2533MB...maybe that will help. But with 1GB of RAM..I did not think this was necessary. I may have to start from scratch and reinstall FS9 if what I did does not work. I just dont understand how some can say...My computer never uses the Page File. but then again, I run FS9 with most sliders to the right, Activesky with 10 cloud layers, using the high performance clouds from FSW though. I also run SBRelay, AVC and SB for VATSIM flying. I this is all with the PMDG 737. So I must say I am taxing the system. I dare anyone to run all that and say their page file never gets accessed.

"I just dont understand how some can say...My computer never uses the Page File."Agreed. XP is based on the NT Kernel, and it uses a page file by default. Won't run without one. Even disabling the PF does no good... XP will create one on its own.No fun having to reinstall. You should search the Scenery folder thoroughly for an errant LC file. If you've had no CTD's then I would put my money on the LC issue.Good luck,Greg

Well Greg, after increasing my PF allocation from the default 1533 to 2533, I loaded up FS9 with the Eaglesoft Citation X. Loaded up all the other programs I normally run with FS as mentioned above. The wx in PHX area was cloudy. Activesky had at least 4 to 5 layers of clouds. I flew from PSP to PHX. Now before when I flew into here with this plane, I always got the out of memory error. This was after the sim froze to load Simflyers PHX which on other planes I use takes about 10 seconds. Now after making the above change, PHX loaded in about 2-3 seconds and I did not get the error. After landing, I checked my PF useage and it was at 1.11GB with FS9.exe using 810MB of virtual memory. I know that seems alot but like I said, I got everything maxed out slider-wise. What do you think...is that about normal? Will my system get damaged increasing my PF allocation to 2533MB?

You can't harm anything by increasing the size of the page file as you have.Your FS9 certainly does like the memory! Mine uses half that amount (though I don't have any addons of the major airports... I avoid them in the sim and RL :-) ).Something doesn't seem right, but a major system diagnostic would be required. If you're interested please post your complete system specs (including all harware and drivers). Also, please download HijackThis (Google). Install it on your system and have it run a scan. Then post the scan log. DO NOT use HJT to delete anything at this time.A screenie of your task manager would be helpful, too.Greg

Hi Eric,You have alot running in the background that is stealing valuable resources while you are flying. A number of things can be shut down in your Services and removed from the Startup."CTHELPER.exe" is part of the Creative Sound package. It offers little usefulness, and anything that it may offer can be easily garnered from a quick Google search if needed. Remove from Startup and disable in Services."UpdReg.exe" is yet another Creative Sound add-on that is of little usefulness. It can be disabled in Services and removed from Startup. (Note! If there are multiple accounts on the system you may need to re-enable this service to make changes to any account).Others in that upper section of your log need further investigation by you as well. For example, some of the Trend Micro stuff might not be needed to run in the background. Some of the Creative apps too can be shut down without any problems. This is what you have running at Startup:O4 - HKLM..Run: C:Program FilesCreativeSBAudigy2Surround MixerCTSysVol.exeO4 - HKLM..Run: C:Program FilesCreativeSBAudigy2DVDAudioCTDVDDet.EXEO4 - HKLM..Run: CTHELPER.EXEO4 - HKLM..Run: C:Program FilesCreativeSB Drive DetSBDrvDet.exe /rO4 - HKLM..Run: C:WINDOWSUpdReg.EXEO4 - HKLM..Run: "C:Program FilesCreativeSplash ScreenCTEaxSpl.EXE" /runO4 - HKLM..Run: "C:Program FilesRoxioEasy CD Creator 5DirectCDDirectCD.exe"O4 - HKLM..Run: "C:Program FilesRivaTunerRivaTuner.exe" /SO4 - HKLM..Run: "C:Program FilesHewlett-PackardHP Software UpdateHPWuSchd2.exe"O4 - HKLM..Run: C:WINDOWSSystem32spooldriversw32x863hpztsb08.exeO4 - HKLM..Run: C:Program FilesHewlett-PackardDigital Imagingbinhpotdd01.exeO4 - HKLM..Run: C:Program FilesATI TechnologiesATI Control Panelatiptaxx.exeO4 - HKLM..Run: "C:Program FilesTrend MicroInternet Security 2005pccguide.exe"O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exeO4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10OSA.EXEO4 - Global Startup: PlexTools.lnk = C:Program FilesPlextorPlexTool.exeDiscern which (if any) of these programs you must have running. Certainly the DirectCD doesn't need to run at Startup. Nor the Rivatuner. Or the Creative Splash Screen. HP Software Update? Nope. The PowerReg Scheduler can certainly be removed from the Startup (you should also take a close look at this... make sure it's from a respected vendor. Some trojans are eeked into systems using this bugger). The ATI Control Panel isn't needed at Startup. The Office10 and Plextools too aren't needed at Startup. The additional HP and Creative stuff running at Startup require your own investigation and decisions. Alot of their stuff simply does not need to be running in the background. It can easily be disabled in Services (or shut down and then restarted using FSAuotstart). The two ATI Services running can be disabled in Services. All you might lose is the Overdrive function in the Control Panel... which means you'll not be able to OC that card a whopping 6.75Mhz! Radlinker is a much better choice for overclocking ATI cards and leaves a tiny footprint.Try to minimize the number of apps using Auto Updates. I have no use for such things. They use resources even when they're doing nothing but waiting. Also, I figure it's my decision what goes on my hard drive and when. I have all Auto Updates on all apps (including XP) disabled. I'll update on my own schedule, thanks software vendors. Finally a word about Trend Micro. A recent version of their package caused nasty memory leaks in XP (though I believe it was a version earlier than yours). But you might consider completely removing it (including cleaning it away from your registry) and then testing in the sim. Seems like alot of work, but testing it might yield valuable info about your memory usage.Good luck and I hope this helps,Greg
