September 26, 200619 yr Shortly, I plan to buy an nVidia 7900GTX card and swap out my ATI Radeon X850 XT PE so I can instal MATROX Triplehead2go with (probably) 3x19" LCDs. At present, my XPS Gen 4 runs FS9 extremely well and the ATI card drives a DELL 2405FP and another 1905FP flawlessly for a total of 3.6 million pixels.Should I add another GB of RAM to my system when I change the video card to the 7900?Appreciate advice, thanks!JS Jonathan Sacks Dell XPS Gen 4, Pentium IV Northwood extreme 3.8Ghz, 3Ghz RAM, eVGA 7900 GTO, 12 GoFlight modules plus MCP-PRO AP and EFIS, GF pedestal, CH rudder pedals, CH throttle quadrant, 42" LG LED, 24" DELL LCD, Windows XP, FS2004, FSUIPC 3.96 FS Autostart 1.1 (Build 11), FS Navigator 4.6, UT, FE, GE, REX, PMDG, Level-D, PSS, etc.
September 26, 200619 yr yeah, I would... I think at this day and age 2gigs is the sweet spot. I added another 2 gigs to my already 2 gig rig and at 4 gigs i never see my memory meter go above about 33%. So if you halved it to 2 gigs i guess you would only use 66% of it. I'm betting you are using all of the 1 gig you have now. Hopefully someone more technically inclined could give you some more concrete numbers. I'm just describing my case. sounds like a nice set up you got going there.later, joe
September 26, 200619 yr Sure 2 GB is the minimum if you are thinking about migrating to FSX and Vista in the future. In these circumstances perhaps 4 GB would be a little better (if you can afford it!). If you're sticking with FS9 and Win XP you won't see much benefit from more than 1 GB of RAM. September 26, 200619 yr Technically I don't think the triple heads setup would require more RAM with everything else being equal. And it doesn't sound like you have any problem running FS9 with your original setup with 1GB ram. So my guess is whatever performance you get with 1GB on triple heads will stay the same with 2GB of ram.1GB vs. 2GB for FS9 has been discussed extensively in the past in various threads. I think the conclusion is it won't hurt. But if running services and programs are kept to a minimum when FS9 is running, most people don't really need another GB of ram. September 27, 200619 yr Author I am sticking with FS9 and my non-DX-10 rig until late 2007. I wanna see how FSX goes for others and wait for Vista to be released and then be patched to fix 15,000 bugs!I can't believe how much RAM some folks are seriously installing to get ready for FSX. 4 GB? September 27, 200619 yr I have 4 GB of RAM but it's for more for Solidworks. My workstation at the office 4 GB is a minimum for large complex assemblies. I cant wait for Vista to cram 8 GB into it. It's overkill at home but FS gets to eat the leftovers ;-)
September 27, 200619 yr All these answers and no one asked the original poster the most important questions? What add-ons do you use? What planes are you flying? What sceneries do you use?If the answers are things like PMDG and LVL-D or PSS with ASV6, FS2Crew, FSPassengers and add-on sceneries then yes, you want two gigs. If you are sticking with default FS then no need.It is really a very simple answer, can't believe no one asked you what software you were running...-Paul Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk

September 27, 200619 yr Yep, do it. PMDG 744 alone is reason enough to do it ;)Depending on what you have, you might want to consider just getting a matched 2 gig pair. September 28, 200619 yr Let's not go overboard. FS9, even with every addon under the sun, will happily wallow in 1G RAM with minor hard drive caching. FSX seems to want more based on my experience with the FSX beta, but not that much more. 2G should do you plenty for both FSX versions.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
