Unbelievably high fps with 7900 GTO in FS 2004 !

Featured Replies

Wow, I can't believe this. For the past 4 days since I installed my new eVGA card, I've had no improvement in frames or fluidity over my ATi RAdeon X850 XT PE card. In fact, frames were terrible in the VC of the PMDG 747-400 last night in a t-storm, down to a range of 3 to 8.Why?Because.....because I forgot to edit the FS9.cfg file and DELETE the ATI card. And the eVGA card was not even inside the cfg file,a arghhh!!On making this simple edit, frames have now risen hugely and I now get fps of 20 to 35 in full t-storms in the PMDG Queen. SPOT view frames are 25 to 60. Clear weather frames are as high as 300 in the default Cessna, averaging 150 to 200. Man, this rocks!I didn't even remember the fs9.cfg file. I was surfing the results of a SEARCH I did this p.m. on the GTO or the nVidia drivers (91.47) when I stumbled on a reply to somebody about not forgetting to edit the cfg file when you change (or add) video cards. It's been so long since I did this that I forgot about it totally. So there we are. Now my GTO rocks like, well, a GTO.Wow, am I a happy camper now !JS

Excellent find JS! I'm looking forward to similar results when my 7900 GTO arrives in the next few days and will keep your cfg file tip in mind.Gary

You absolutely HAVE to do the cfg edit!I am currently over KBOS in the Queen in foul storms with very good frames and excellent fluidity. Did we ever imagine we could get 35 fps in full t-storms ? And 18-24 fps in the VC in the storm too !JS

Shoot, I passed on this card for $245.00 after reading other peoples results with it and seeing you previously were using an x850xt board. Glad it's not a dud for you. How's the IQ compared to the ATI and what's your resolution??Regards, KendallDell 8400 3.2 GHZ H.T.800 FSB/2MB L22 GB 533 DDR2X800XT 256MB/Cat.5.13's6x Adaptive AA/16x HQ A/FIntegrated SoundDual Monitor: Dell 2405/1905CH Yoke/Pedals

How does this card compare with the ATI 9800 Pro AGP? I mean, what kind of differences can I expect? Increased framerates and improved quality?I has using an Athlon64 3800+ 1Gb (400mhz) DDR RAM.RH

I would imagine that it's probably twice as fast as a 9800 Pro. It is at least 50% faster than my trusty old X850 XT PE which I loved and still do even though it's now boxed up. You should see a vbast improvement in frames and fluidity of more complex add-ons, especially in the VC.JS

Which should I get. The 7900gtx or the 7950?The 2 card 7950 is not much more expensive. I doubt that I will use sli but will the double the memory be of any help in applications, say FSX that are not sli ???Yes yes I know about dx10 but I live for today and not tommorow. Thanks

As far as I am aware, you only get 512M memory in single card mode, so the 7900gtx will perform just the same as 7950 in FSX.Gary

I have an Athlon 64 3800+, 1 gb ram, but my system is not dual core. Also, the only video card I have is the 256 shared that is intergrated into the computer. Am I screwed? My framerates were horrible even at low settings, so I am wondering if I need to buy a good video card, more ram, or both, or do I need a whole new system. I was told that the dual core would not add anything to programs like flightsim, but would just help if I were multitasking. It was truly disapointing to install FSX and see it run as poorly as it did, especially since my computer is only 9 months old. I bought the professional FSX edition since I am a real life pilot and I thought it would add to the experience, but it has added nothing to date.Pilot Pete

A dedicated graphics card of nVidia 7600 or ATI X1600 with 256M graphics memory would likely give you the biggest improvement both quality and performance with FSX. It would also free up 256M system memory that would otherwise have been taken up by your onboard graphics trying to cope with FSX graphics, so you would get an extra benefit from this also.Whilst 1GB of RAM will suffice with FSX, it has already shown prefer wallowing in 2GB, and this will become more prevalent when FSX addons start appearing on the scene.Unless you want to change your motherboard, CPU and possibly memory to a Core 2 Duo setup, your current CPU should run FSX pretty well, even without dual core.To summarise - get a dedicated graphics card first, and see how things improve. If the game still regularly stutters coincident with the hard drive light being on, consider another 1G RAM. If FPS is still too low for your liking, try tweaks and tips posted here first, move sliders back to the left and if all else fails consider upgrading to a Core 2 Duo setup.Gary
