January 27, 200719 yr In the past, I've always upgraded Windows OS changes practically on the day they were released; however, I'm not so sure about the new one coming on Wednesday, the 30th. Vista will be available for the consumer mid-week, and I'm hoping with my system, that it will be a move in the right direction for FSX.How many of you will be upgrading XP on Wednesday, and if so, with what version, and why?I'm curious and I think this will be a good discussion here on AVSIM in the FSX forum as opposed to the Hardware forum.
January 27, 200719 yr I don't plan on going to Vista. Everything I've heard suggest Vista will be slower for gamers. I don't know if this applies to FSX, but I don't think Vista will provide anything new and amazing that's worth leaving XP Pro which runs great for. I as others may be forced to go to Vista in the future as MS has stated that it will be the only operating system that gets support for DX10. Hopefully this will change (or someone will port DX10 over for XP).
January 27, 200719 yr I will definitely upgrade to Vista (and Office 2K7) on Wednesday and will run FSX in Vista. However, I will also keep a copy of Windows XP in dual-boot or as VM for compatibility purposes. Vista is only marginally "slower" than XP. I have seen many benchmarks of XP vs. Vista and the performance loss was about 1-5%, which is totally acceptable. Over time that loss will also disappear as manufacturers release optimized Vista drivers.Yes, Vista needs beefier hardware, but that's progress.Pat
January 27, 200719 yr My Vista is ordered. I am getting the Home Premium edition. I was gonna get the Ultimate edition but there really were not enough features over the home premium to warrant the extra
January 27, 200719 yr Not a snoballs chance in ####...As a matter of fact, I believe I'll purchase anther copyor two of XP Pro.I am of the mind set that what I do with my computer and on my computer is my business and I don't want M$ tryingto dictate how I use my computer any more thatn it alreadydoes with XP.I don't need, nor do I want, any of the pretty bells & whistlesjust as I didn't want or need them with XP. My XP desktop andfolder setup looks just like those on my #3 & # 4 machines that are still running Win98SE and Win95.I don't need the additional BLOAT of Vista. I now have 2GB or ramon my #1 machine and that suffices to run FSX at a satisfactory level.I am adamantly against DRM in any form and won't purchase Vistaas long as that is built in...which translates to "I shall neverpurchase Vista"! January 27, 200719 yr Not until nvidia has either fixed their drivers or actually provided any will i upgrade. Nvidia is really ruining it for many people right now and their upgrade path to vista. They are supposed to be releasing a vista driver for the 8800 this tuesday after 3 months and there is already word that there will be missing features and it will be of a general beta status. If so then i will be asking evga for a full refund on my 8800 purchased in november on the pretense of false advertising. Either the 8800 works with all features in vista on release date or it is false advertising and they are in breach of contract. As i can see it now there is no compelling reason to upgrade to vista, especially with nvidia and their lousy drivers and support.

January 27, 200719 yr Playing around in Vista Ultimate RC2 I just can't get the same performance as in XP, and of course you need every frame you can get with FSX. Maybe spend the money on TrackIR4pro instead and get more enjoyment. For the NVidia 8800 guys, sounds like the leaked 100.30 driver used in CES demos is about the same as what will be released next week.scott s..
January 27, 200719 yr DRM is only a nuisance, if you choose to use it. If you don't have anything DRM then it won't make any difference. iTunes uses DRM as well and noone seems to complain about it.Vista is actually a lot less 'bloated' than any previous OS from MS and the performance loss right now is minimal. Yes, it will need more RAM, but only a fraction goes towards the additional 'bells and whistles', but mostly towards the new indexing function and hardware failure detection, which can both be turned off.A lot of the changes in Vista are actually under the hood: Better memory management, more effective CPU cycles, multimedia, I/O and thread optimization. All this will greatly help improve stability and performance. I am not a fanboi, but I know what I am talking about, because I have lived and breathed IT in over 20 years. Win98SE and 95 have not been supported for years, so if you're happy with all the security holes, then so be it.Not critizing at all. It's all about personal preference. Some are happy with a 15yo Ford Bronco with an 8-track, some others want the latest Beemer with surround, GPS and the additional things that make the experience more comfortable.Pat
January 27, 200719 yr Author Thanks for the input....however, I'm still confused. It seems that some will buy Vista and some will not. What's the TRUE deciding factor: Is it RAM or is it the system that you are running? It may be a great addition to a system that is capable of really running it. Look at my signature....do you think that what I have will be good enough to add Vista to it?
January 28, 200719 yr Nvidia and their drivers are the only major reason i am holding off for a while. I have another machine with a 7900gt in vista and both sims run terribly compared to windows xp. Nvidia is the major monkey wrench for me and many others. I also can't ditch them for ati because ati cards don't support triplehead resolutions. I'm hoping when ati releases their new dx10 card next month or the month after that it will have the support i need so i can jettison nvidia and their incompetence for good. I mentioned my unhappiness to them on the nvidia forums and asked when the real drivers would be ready and my account was banned for it. It appears that unless you are totally happy with the card and keep your mouth shut that they just delete the posts and ban the accounts. I guess that's one way to control your image on the net...
January 28, 200719 yr Look at my signature....do you think that what I have will be good enough to add Vista to it?How's that for a rhetorical question!Lol...sorry, couldn't help it. Mike
January 28, 200719 yr Vista needs most of all more RAM - the CPU is an important part as well, but it's not as important as a sufficient amount of memory.Personally, I wouldn't consider Vista on a machine with less than 1GHz and less than 1GB Ram.Pat
January 28, 200719 yr 100% agreed. An OS is only as good as the 3rd party drivers.Any 'virgin' OS usually runs like a charm and boots in record time. Until you install 3rd party drivers (and applications), which are most of the time the only thing that really makes an OS bloated with their unwanted upgrade notifications, shameless addition to startup and the taskbar to perform unnecessary and obsolete background tasks.Who needs a Quicktime Boost Start, an Adobe Acrobat Reader Smart Start or a nagging Logitech reminder? Ever tried to upgrade a Creative card? Mindblogging. It's usually the drivers that are the worst offenders when it comes to cluttering up your OS.That's the only reason I would be concerned about recommending Vista. Creative has not even final drivers for their Audigy 2 and the current nVidia drivers are simply not as good as the XP drivers. Logitech has only a handful of drivers out and only for their most current hardware. It'll take a few months before we'll see drivers that can rival their XP counterparts.Pat
