May 14, 200719 yr the case with the 4 green fans in the side>which is pictured?Where's the pic :-hmmm
May 14, 200719 yr Very interesting....I'm also in the stick with 939 boat...until next gen comes aroundSay, you guys with the SD 3700, what Revs are you running? I did the whole OCing thing and in the end it wasnt Orthos stable with just a 2.45 GHz clock on it (2.2 stock).I fiddled with so many settings that I didn't know even existed, went through phone calls with a couple of guys on this forum, and never got it prime stable. All my apps worked fine, no crashes etc even after 9 hours straight in FSX maxed settings.... I had the Rev that was newer I think and apparently after some reading - the one that doesn't like to OC well. I wish I could have someone walk me through it all again, see if I could get it. I think the Rev was DH-E6 that I have....oh yep, cpuz shows it.Everyone said "oh the SD's" Oced like mad - but mine wouldn't....so now I'm back at 2.2 but sure liked the extra gain @ 2.45 in FSX! | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
May 14, 200719 yr One thing to keep in mind is that in addition to having memory that can scale and losening the timings on memory, on the AMDs you also have to pull back the HT ratio (from 5 to 4, or 3 if your cpu is OC'ing well enough). (My bios calls it the LDT bus) Although if you had talked to that many people about it, I'm sure you knew that...For the 3800 X2 I just ordered (2.0 GHz, for $81 and free shipping... see link in above post), some guy posted in a review that he clocked it up to 3.2 at stock voltage. Color me skeptical, but it still sounds like people are having great luck OC'ing it. I hope I do as well. But either way, 2 cores for $81 isn't a bad deal.
May 14, 200719 yr Yep I had it at 4, 248x4 is 992 right? So my "fsb" was running a tad slow.... but I had my cpu @ 2480MHz so that was exciting. My question is, although cheap, is a 3800 X2 really gonna do much better than our 3700's? Say you OCed the 3700 to 2.6, and the 3800 to 2.6, would it be worth spending the 80 bucks? Then again, if by spending 80 bucks I can get a nice OC (might have to invest in a thermalright or something) and a nice boost in FSX especially after SP1, then it might be worth it....81 whew thats cheap! | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |

(!) Really helped push the cpu up though. One question I have, is how do you figure your mem is at 429mhz? May 14, 200719 yr I wonder if I talked with you too...I was at the exact same clock as you cept mine wasn't stable in Orthos. What are your RAM timings? I had 2.5-3-3-6 with my xms ram. Maybe all I had to do was go to 3-3-3-8....hmmmHave you guys ever used the AI overclocking program? May 14, 200719 yr When I talked to you about o/c'ing my rig that one time, for some reason, I never picked up on the fact that you need to drop your ram speed to get the cpu speed up there.Just went right over me. You shoulda told me. :)My present ram timings are 3-3-3-8 at 1T. I was running 2.5-3-3-8 as my signature shows, but for this test I thought I better put the ram back at the timings where it was rated.I may drop to 2.5 soon but I want to make sure I'm stable where I'm at first.Plus with SP1 about to come out, I think I will cool it until after things settle in with that. I am going to do performance comparisons and I need to bench my rig tonight to see where I'm at pre-SP1.Re: "AI Overclocking Program" -- by that I assume you mean the AI Overclock that some BIOS'es have? I think on mine, the highest overclock is what they call, "10%" and it wasn't too aggressive.I got better fps in FS by doing my own overclock.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB

May 14, 200719 yr Yes, I was running 1T as well....apparently theres some weird bug with my mobo that you cant do 1T over FSB250 (HTT whatever sheesh)Anyway, I delved into the advanced ram timings with some "expert" help and the cpu never really liked 245x10 anyway. I had my ram at 208ish and it runs 200 stock....I don't have a clue what my cpu didn't like.... I heard my revision sucks at OCing...hmmmI wish I could try it again hehe | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
May 14, 200719 yr Concerning the X2 3800, I have mine running at 2,7 Ghz. Mind you I had to up the Vcore to 1,52 (from 1,32) and install an aftermarket watercooler (TT silent water). Btw, I also have an A8N32 mobo and you really need to enable the "overvoltage cpu core" in the BIOS. This adds 0.2 to Vcore and enables the 8 phase power which was supposed to be a big selling point of this mobo. If you want to run it at stock voltages but stable you should enable the above option and then lower the processor voltage option to -0,2 of the original value. Hope I have expressed myself in a relatively comprehensible fashion... Vassilis
May 14, 200719 yr >My question is, although cheap, is a 3800 X2 really gonna do>much better than our 3700's? Say you OCed the 3700 to 2.6,>and the 3800 to 2.6, would it be worth spending the 80 bucks? Solar was basically asking the same question. Remains to be seen, but there was already a small benifit to dual-core machines with FSX as it was released, and they have done work to enable more benifit with SP1. That convinced me to order the DC chip. (I'm in a similar situation to you-- I had a modest OC from 2.2 to 2.5-- but two years of over-volting it seems to have damaged something because I can't run OC'd stable any longer. I think I'm going to stick with the OC I can get a stock voltage with this chip)I plan to set up some benchmarks and run them on SP1 before and after getting my DC chip, so I can let you know more precisely if it help in a little bit. My guess is a 15-25% increase in FPS with significantly quicker texture loading (at the same frequency as my current processor). But, as I told Solar, since this chip is supposed to be my b-day gift and my b-day is not until June 2, I have yet to breach the subject of whether I will be allowed to open it when I get it on Tueday.

May 14, 200719 yr >WHO'S CASE IS THAT? ANYONE HAVE A LINK?Not sure, it was just an add I saw at TigerDirect.com. I'll see if I can get the answer at the hardware forum I post at.
May 14, 200719 yr >One question I have, is how do you figure your mem is at>429mhz? What calculation are you using?Mem speeds are confusing as there are two ways to calculate and two different answers. I even get two different answers depending on what utility I use to view the mem speed. The method used to get 429MHZ is:Mem divider / rated mem speed * FSB = OC speedSo with a 166 diver on ddr400 (200MHz) and my overclock we get this:166 / 200 * 258 = 214MHz, which is the same as 428 ddr speed. For some reason it reports as 429 in my utility.
