Geforce 8800, 8600 or wait longer for posible 8700?

Featured Replies

What to do, what to do?I was really thinking about buying a Geforce 8600GTS but after some resarching it just doesn't seem good enough with it's 128-bit Memory Interface. I am now considering the GeForce 8800 GTS for a $100 more with 320-bit memory interface. And then I hear this thing about DX10.1 comming out some time soon with vista sp1 and the 8800 will not support all the features of DX10.1. Now i am seriously thinking of sticking it out a bit longer to see what comes it the future. I found this article: http://www.insidehw.com/content/view/172/35/ - not sure if it is true, but it states a Gforce 8700 will be comming out in November. It's would be perfect because it would be right in the middle of the 8800 and 8600 with a 256-bit memory interface, probably around $200 - $250, and it will probably include dx10.1 support. I think my best choice is in waiting as i don't really need a DX10 card untill the fall patch comes out for FSX/SP2 / DX10. What do you think, do you agree with me in waiting? I have been waiting a while -I've been using my onboard Geforce 6100 graphics for like 2 years now.

just wait for a dx10.1 card....dx10 patch isn't even out yet for fsx...

The FSX SP2 won't even use DX10.1, so unless you want/need a DX10.1 card for some other application, then it doesn't matter.I have not heard about an "8700" card. Rather I have heard about an "8900" card which is nVidia's next-gen chip, and it is slated to be released in November. Maybe the 8700 will be the bargain version of the 8900, much like the 8600 is to the 8800. "GeForce 8900GTX which will replace the current high-end 8800GTX. It will ship at a retail price of $549 USD and it will also see the inclusion of GDDR4 memory which allows NVIDIA to raise the clock speeds to outrageous 2200MHz frequencies. The power boost may also come from the new 80nm manufacturing process." Hmmm interesting, I didn't hear about the 8900 - thanks for informming me. I bet your right, i bet the 8700 will be the lower grade product of the 8900. NVIDIA left a gap in the numbers for a reason. I guess i will have to stick it out a couple more months as buying a graphic card now would be a waist with this new CDUA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) stuff comming to the market. I don't know about paying $550 for it though, thats why i hope they release a 8700. I don't know if this stuff is true though. I could be waiting for quite a while. Maby i will buy a cheep 8600. Shoot, I don't know.http://news.softpedia.com/news/NVIDIA-Stri...ies-47233.shtml

One thing about it, when the 8900's are released the 8600/8800's will get a lot cheaper.More and more I am looking at february/march/april to upgrade my FS computer.By then maybe I can get some 8900/8700 series gpu for <$400.And a Penyrn cpu for <$300.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

Well i just said heck with it so i just bought a Geforce 8600 GTS for $170 minus $15 in rebates at tigerdirect.com. The way i look at it is: I could be waiting a century for those new cards to come out, my current graphics already run FSX at good performace so this graphics card should be plenty good, it's DX10 compatible for the upcomming patch, in a year or so the new 8900 or 8700 cards will be fairly cheep and perhaps i'll consider getting one of them then. And hay, my grandmpa is coming in a week or so and he loves flight simulator - why not give a nice smooth ride, ha? !!!
