FSX and other games on a widescreen monitor?

Featured Replies

I found this at newegghttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16824252008And it appears to be a high quality monitor.... and I like the price...I can't believe the prices of LCDs today...I pad about 340 for my 19in lcd in april of 2006! whew...anywayHow does FSX work with widescreen monitors? How bout other games such as Half life, or warcraft, BF2142/bf2, etc? Are things stretched out, or is it ok?I'm only looking at this monitor...not buying or anything...but I do like the price !!!I guess what I'm asking is: is there a strong advantage over std 4:3 lcds like the one I have right now? Do you have one, do you like it?

Hi Ryan,http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho..._id=28224&page=Post #6Best thing that's happened to me of late! Everything looks great, even older games that won't configure to display 1680x1050 still look fantastic. These appear slightly stretched horizontally. FSX is beautiful and gauges appear round. FS9 is less successful in that respect, but it's really no big deal. I was flying VOZ earlier this evening following the 1.5 update and the experience was utterly immersive. Oblivion is a visual feast and performs well with HDR enabled on my ATI Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB PCI-e GPU. As I indicated, my detective work guddling inside the back of the unit revealed it was a 'C' panel made for Samsung by CHI MEI OPTOELECTRONICS. End user experience appears to indicate that not much effort has gone into configuring these panels prior to release to market. My experience was no different - colours had a definite and unpleasant blue bias. The solution for me was to invest in a Spyder2express which allowed the automatic creation of a colour profile for this monitor. It's very easy to use and the results are fabulous!Okay, purchasing the 'Spyder2express' did add significantly to the overall cost, but I would suggest that the creation of an accurate monitor specific colour profile is something we should all be doing if we really want to appreciate the imagery sim/games designers intend us to see. Moreover, monitor settings do drift over time and being able to update the profile at regular intervals - takes all of 5-10mins - is really essential. Everything looks better and all those photographs that appear under or overexposed can now, without question, be blamed on the photographer and not the monitor ;)I say go for it. Widescreen 16:10 is rapidly increasing in popularity and it's no wonder. Apart from the welcome increase in desktop real estate, it just feels more natural to the eyes.Cheers!Mike

Hi Ryan, I hate to be a party pooper, but looking at your specs please consider you'll likely loose a good deal of your current FSX perf. Perhaps try before buy? 1280x to 1680x is quite a significant step. Sorry, nevertheless, hope this adds to thoughts. @ Mike, you don't happen to be a flat panel sales person, do you?!? :-) :-) No, seriously, hope you're doing well up North. Nice to see you around again. Kind regards Jaap

"looking at your specs please consider you'll likely loose a good deal of your current FSX perf. Perhaps try before buy? 1280x to 1680x is quite a significant step."Yes, I have to agree with Jaap. Sorry, Ryan, I didn't pay attention to your specs. You could, of course, always consider an X1950 Pro ;)Jaap,Thanks :)"Mike, you don't happen to be a flat panel sales person, do you?!?"Oh heaven forfend! But, wait, on giving the matter further consideration, how am I doing? Perhaps it would be a lucrative part-time option to see me through my retirement years..LOLI owned a nice Hyundai Q17A Digital 17" 1280x1024 monitor and I used to enthuse endlessly about its performance, but this Samsung SyncMaster 226BW 22" 1680x1050 is really something else. Its a very handsome piece of kit parked beside my white Antec P150 case. To my eyes it appears flawless, sharp as a razor...and then there's that 2ms response time...wooooowwww!!! I doubt whether they come much better for the money. Here's a link to a very nice monitor testing utility:http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Vi...itor-Test.shtmlBest regards,Mike

Ryan - My old, quite good, Samsung 19" CRT died about six months ago and I took the plunge to a 20" Viewsonic VX2035wm. I still have a Samsung 19" CRT on my backup computer.20 men and a mule couldn't drag me away from my widescreen LCD. I will never buy another 4:3 screen of any type. I won't throw away a perfectly good monitor, but I kind of can't wait for the other Samsung to die. Going from one to the other is like going from being outdoors to being in a very small room. It just uses so much more of your otherwise wasted peripheral vision that it feels more satisfying to look at. HTH.-Seadog

Guys,Increasing screen res in FSX doesn't give make a huge difference to performance. Here is an extreme example of doubling the amount of pixels FSX has to push, and this was done when I had my 7900 card installed:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/177248.jpgGary

oh yeah, lol, I forgot that I would be purchasing this with my system upgrade, and I'm not sure when that will be...a few months I would guessFYI I'm thinking of goingAbit IP-35Pro moboE6750 OCed (eventually)2x2GB Patriot RAMevga 8800GTS 640mb gpuI think that would power a larger res monitor fine...It seems developers these days are making games more compatible with widescreen anyway...I was realy impressed with the price of this one!

I purchased a Dell 27" about 6 months ago. I followed that with a Westinghouse 37" and I couldn't be happier. LARGE is GREAT.I run the Dell at 1920x1200 and the Westinghouse at 1920x1080.I only have an old Pentium 4 running @3.87. Of course, FSX staggers at KLAX and the like. But that happened with my previous 2 CRT's running at 1024x768. I was, and of course more so now, planning to upgrade. FS9 runs fantastically beautiful and very very smooth.Anybody with any hesitation should plunge right in and get that bigger monitor.Abe

Hi Gary, thanks for the graph, interesting. Lets note you had a 7900 which is a much more powerful GPU than the 6800 in the OP. Maybe I should have written more precisely? HST, I should have also known Ryan was going for a new computer from a previous discussion... Sorry, my bad, Ryan. My main input was supposed to be: Always consider the GPU when you consider new - and in particular - hi-res displays. For some miraculous reason, this is often overseen. If we turn this 'rule' around, the latest and greatest GPU isn't necessarily necessary for lower resolutions. @ Mike, I found a utility for my Eizo screen through your link. Thanks a bundle. Looks like you're having a great time. Good to see you around more often. I wonder what Greg's up to? Kind regards Jaap
