Use XP's CLEAR TYPE for viewing text on an LCD monitor

Featured Replies

For those that do not know...XP has a LCD exclusive setting that is designed to bring TEXT in, clear and sharp on an LCD screen.Google 'Clear Type Tuner' without the hypes. On the Microsoft Page, just follow step-by-step directions, and if you haven't used this before, you will be amazed now in how clear and easy-to-read all your text and graphics are.Cheers!

I need something like that for my old 21" CRT running at a 1200x1600 resolution.Cheers!

I used this on all my CRT's before I ever had an LCD, you can use it no matter your monitor!Just nav to your control panel, goto display, then appearance, and then effects..tick "use the following method to smooth screen fonts" and make sure clear type is selected...enjoy.Danon -

Looks like s**t to me, always has. Even at work when it defaulted to ClearType it sucked. Yes, I'm on LCD.

Me too! My first experience with it was when upgrading to IE7 and I thought yuck - what made my fonts go all fuzzy on me. I couldn't work out what it was, so it was back to IE6 at that time. Then I got Vista on my new notebook, and the whole thing was infected with fuzzy/blurry fonts. A bit of googling later and it turns out ClearType ironically blurs the sharp text that LCDs produce to make it look "clearer". They should have got Borat to name it and called it ClearType .... NOT! :-lolAnyway, I have worked out how to turn it off in everything and now my fonts are back to what I consider "clear type" ;-)Not having a go a you Mitch, rather just to say that with this setting in particular YMMV.Gary

Yeah, I find it odd, and this is the first time I've seen anyone say they like it. It really looks blurry as if I don't have my glasses on. I'm not sure how they think it's "Clear"? If it blurs, then it's not clear, is it??? I'll bet a lot of people are living with it and not even knowing they can put it back to standard. I knew immediately it was something I could turn off and did so right away, then it was back in IE7! When the "Run Once" page came up I said "Oh no you don't, you're going back to standard in here too!" Not gonna sneak that by me. LOL

The 'fuzz' you guys feel is happening when you view Clear Type is actually called, font dithering. This is the method behind focusing the font characters on an LCD screen. It is like night and day in clarity between not using it on LCD's and for using it.I find with Clear Type technology, both my LCD monitors text is now sharply focused with no swimming effect a while after viewing. It is of course totally the personal preference of the user. For myself, if LCD's did not have a soft focus problem, MS would not have had the need to have created Clear Type.CRT's were not effected by this phenomenon.Personal pref's rule, as always, though.Just wondering, did the both of you use the Clear Type Tuner and go through the personal selection process in the step-by-step to arrive at your personal and custom setting of Clear Type, or did the both of you just 'turn' on the feature in XP? If you merely did that, then I would totally understand that you guys were less then overwhelmed. It would then have practically no value for you.Cheers!Mitch

Mitch,No I hadn't run the tuner, so I just did. Whilst using the tuner does allow one to select a less blurry font, it is still nonetheless a blurry font to me. Sorry, I did try :-)Gary

Hi Gare!No problem! I didn't think you had. The reason is that I myself just turned the feature on...without using the set-up, and like yourself, was so under-whelmed, LOLMight I make a suggestion though? Gary, go through the set-up slowly with the Clear Type Tuner, and then after having picked the level and font that you think is the BEST that is there for your personal tastes...give it a try for a week. See if your eyes actually become less strained (if at all of course). You might grow to like the result.BTW, thanks again to the two of you for that GREAT offering of yours...the Core Report. I intend to upgrade in the next several, not imminent, years and that report was a most solid baseline for my early CPU platform research.:)!Mitch

Hay!! Thanks for this update, never knew this was available, it works great............(how do people find out these clever things??:-)

I agree it looks great. I dont wear glasses or anything. Not sure whats happening with you guys where it looks horrible. I hate jaggy text, and this is basically antialiasing the text. Much better on my end. Oh well...to each his own.DO -

You're welcome. Your eyes will thank you, trust me....:)Mitch

Well, I tried the tuner again and this time I lasted 10 mins before I had to turn that godawful thing off. I'll take my pixelated, but sharp as a tack, old school fonts any day over this new fangled Clear Type :-)Gary
