Newbie advice on Multi-Monitor Setup

Featured Replies

I've just gone out and got a second TFT monitor running at 1400 x 1050 and have an older one running at 1280 x 1034I need some advice specifically1/ Can you setup a VC (fs9 or FSX) over two screens using a dual output graphics card? ( I am currently using an ATI 1650 due to be replaced by a new 3870)2/ When I start the 2D (fs9 or FSX)cockpit, the panel is always on one screen and the outside view on another - can I do something in a config file to make sure they always start on the same screen, so I can use the second for GPS / Radio stack etcI'd welcome any links to information in general about multi-monitor setup on a single PCThanksRoy Hinds

Roy- #1 As far as I know you can't get VC to work over a multi mon setup-at least I can't. I think this is where TripleHead2GO would shine.#2 Have you set up your monitor configuration in Control Panel? In Display/settings there should be a schematic pic of the monitors. You need to drag these pics into position as they are in reality. Probably side by side? Then click on each to set correct resolution. Finally, click the box below which says "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor". You should now be able to drag the mouse cursor from extreme left of the monitors to far right - just one big desktop! Is the view window undocked? If not undock it and drag it to the other monitor. You can create a second view with the keyboard "square left bracket". Using num keyboard, you can set to view left forward or right forward as needed- look in FS assignments (see "LOOK---") to get the key combinations. Once you've got things sort of where you like them, save that flight and you can go back next time without having to repeat all this! Then as you refine that setup, save it again! There are many not difficult tweaks and settings you can make to bring a multi mon setup to a surprising level of realism. Search the forums for- multi monitor or VIEW_LEFT_FORWARD for some ideas. It will all seem a bit strange at first- won't take long till it's second nature. Like with TH2G, nVidia cards support a wider and higher range of spanned resolutions, but it does work with ATI. Look for span mode where dual and clone modes are set in your video driver control panel. Oh, and this only works for XP.Gary

Thanks AlexI shall save the panel configurations for each of the aircraft types that I fly load each time and then select my time / airport. Your setup looks neat. I am not wanting at the moment to go to the expense of the Matrox unit.

Thanks Gary, I shall check out the nVidia offerings as it's not to late to cancel my ATI graphics card and I am running XP anyway. Even if I switch to Vista I'd make the machine daul boot anway.

Gary-Thanks for the VC tip. My Dad always said - "Son, try to learn something new every day". I did! That's why flight simming is such a great Alzheimer's prophylaxis. At least for this old bird! Some time ago I experimented with Virtual C'pit. But it was always Nolo Contendre against 2D with popups open across a 48" perspective!Alex Reid CYYJ
