Advice or Guidance on Monitor

Featured Replies

Well Xmas is near and Father Xmas is giving himself a presentthis year. A brand new 24" Monitor, thing is, I haven't got a clue as regards LCD-TFT monitors and seeing that it will bemostly used for FS, I thought I'd ask for some sound advicefrom other simmers out there.Had a good look around some shops today and the 2 makes that impressed me the most were Samsung & NEC. Also saw some Viewsonic, Asus and Acer. The NEC monitors I saw which impressed me wereAccuSync

5ms is way faster than you need for FS. NEC seems fine, and so do many others! How important is blacklevel? The faster TN (twisted nematic) LCD's typically have considerably poorer black levels, which negatively impacts night flying in FS, and also for digital photography calibration. Moreover, these ultra fast LCDs can also suffer from narrow viewing angles so that the viewer must remain straight in front of and on a level with the LCD. So with these concerns, my recommended screen will . . .1. Probably have an S-PVA panel (as contrasted with a TN panel)2. As a result of #1 above, will probably have a response time of 6-25ms. I think for FS, since it's a slowish moving game, 25ms would probably work, even tho it would be a poor choice for any faster moving games. Look at this link to check a model for its panel type: http://www.flatpanels.dk/panels.phpGoing to PriceGrabber.com, one can quickly see many 24"+ displays with 5 star user ratings. Go then to the above link and check what kind of panel the model uses. From there, do some research on Wiki to learn about the different types of panels which in large part dictates the performance characteristics of the display you are looking for.I have a TN type panel now, a Samsung 204B. Looks great from head on, looks nasty when you are off to the side or high or low, and has very poor black levels, making night flying not nearly as pleasant as it was on my Sony 22" CRT. Were I to buy a new LCD today, I would look for anything but a TN panel, allow the response time to go up a bit from teh 5ms I thought mattered before, and enjoy much nicer night flying, and dark scenes, and have better viewing angles. Restricted viewing angles are especially problematic when you have someone who wants to see something on your display (like photos), and is standing off to the side of the screen.

You are most welcome and best wishes for a happy new screen! I am going to start researching a new display too as this one is headed for the lady of the house (who isn't nearly as picky!).Cheers,Noel
