January 16, 200818 yr After a lot of reading here and elsewhere I bought the Samsung 24" 245BW monitor last week at BestBuy for 499.00.Could have bought it cheaper elsewhere but I had CC points I used for BestBuy gift cards and the store is fairly close so returns are not an issue..Great unit and am very happy with it.Then I was referred to the Hannas-G 28".Best Buy had it on sale for 549.00.So I bought it today with thr idea that they have 30 day return policy so I figured I could at least try them both.So far the Hannas-G seems to be doing everything the Samsung does only bigger.Should I be looking for anything specific?I use it only for FS and a few minor things.I have new system.Nvidea 8800GT/512MB,quad core 6600 @2.4 and 2GB ram. Will I have lower frame rates pushing the bigger monitor? All things being equal I think the extra 50.00 was well worth it.Am I missing something that the Hannas-G is inexpensive? Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
January 16, 200818 yr >Will I have lower frame rates pushing the>bigger monitor? All things being equal I think the extra 50.00>was well worth it.Am I missing something that the Hannas-G is>inexpensive? Thanks,RonRon,Both monitors have the same maximum reoslution of 1920 X 1200. So, you will have no issues with a decrease in framerates. The reason some us have recommended the Hanns-G monitor is because it is so inexpensive for what you get. FSX is just awesome on that big wide screen. If you have not done so Ron, there is a setting in your fsx.cfg file that you should change. I beleive it is:WideViewAspect=trueBy default the value is set to false. Set it to true for your new Hanns-G and you will get a wider field of view.
January 16, 200818 yr Author Thanks for that.I see I misspelled my monitor.Hanns-G.Duh.So gar I am really liking it although I did get a headache last night.Hope it was not from staring at the huge picture.Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
January 16, 200818 yr Since the Hanns-G 28" and the Samsung 24" both have the same max resolution, then doesn't that mean by definition that the Hanns-G would be a little blockier on its bigger screen? I mean, you have an image that is 1920 x 1200--one on a 24" screen, and another on a 28" screen.RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
January 16, 200818 yr Author I don't know since I can't run them side by side but the picture looks real god to me.If there is a difference I don't notice it.I checked other 28" monitors available and the all have the 1900 X 1200 resolution.Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
January 17, 200818 yr Author OK,I changed to wideview. It does look better. What exactly changed?Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
January 17, 200818 yr >OK,I changed to wideview. It does look better. What exactly>changed?RonRon,It is changing the aspect ratio to widescreen for FSX. In a sense you could liken it to zooming your view out (however it is actually adding more of the FSX environment to the left and right hand side of your screen).Rhett,You would be correct in assuming the 28" to be blockier. The closer you are to it the more you would notice it. However, if you have the LCD at a proper minimum distance away from you, you won't notice a difference. A good rule of thumb for LCDs is to have the device at least as far away from you as what its size is. So as an example, for a 24" at least 24" away from you.
January 17, 200818 yr Author Sargeski,After 2 nights of using this Hanns-G monitor I am happy. What do you have your brightness and contrast set at.I read where people were complaining and changing the brightness and contrast my default settings look good.Maybe Hanns=G changed something after complaints? How long have you had yours? Thanks for all the help.Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
January 17, 200818 yr Hi,I have the Samsung 226BW 22" and the default out-of-the-box colour setup was dreadful with an ugly blue bias. I invested in a Spyder2express and 10mins later the colour problems had all gone away. I know it means spending a bit more, but if you really want to take all the guess work out of the creation of a monitor image colour matching profile then the Spyder will do the job...once set up correctly this monitor is superb in every respect!! And don't forget your investment can be used repeatedly in the future if you see any drift in the colour settings. In practice LCDs are pretty stable so you shouldn't have to repeat the exercise very often...unless, of course, your line of work demands absolute fidelity at all times. You do have the ability to set it up to remind you to recalibrate at predetermined intervals.Mike

Out of the box the brigthness was cranked to 100%. After using my iOne Pro spectrophotometer to calibrate my monitor, I have my brightness set to 16 and the contrast set to 69.--Bob
January 17, 200818 yr Author Wow,that's quite a reduction.I don't have a spectrwhatever but I'll try your settings and see.I took my Samsung back to BestBuuy today. The sales guy said the next new thing coming out is a concave monitor to wrap around. He said this Hanns-G is a great monitor for the price.I told him I had no complaints. Thanks,Ron Bring back Chief Illiniwek!University of Illinois.
January 18, 200818 yr I use 40 brightness, 53 contrast, and in the color settings I use red 100 / green 100 / blue 98.I also set 12% digital vibrance in the nvidia cp because I like it.1900x1200 is plenty high enough res for this screen size. IE7 text looks crisp and clear.I think I'm gonna buy a Pantone Huey Pro calibrator. It calibrates your monitor, then sits in it's stand monitoring your rooms lighting and performing real time color compensations.I think I'll get a 17 or 19 hannsg to put next to this one. Then I can use it for wmp, ie7, and undocked fsx windows like the gps and radio stack.
