ATI 3870X2 ver XFX Geforce 8800 xXx Video Board

Featured Replies

Hi,Well, I'm not sure if you had a chance to see my ATI / Nvidia comparison screen shots before they were removed. I will say this, the ATI 3870X2 is the board to own. ATI's new X2 board along with their new drivers can keep the 8800 series board in check. Keep in mind that Nvidia's 8800 drivers have been out awhile while ATI is just getting started perfecting their drivers, things can only get better for ATI.With that said, my 2-AFX Geforce 8800GTX xXx boards are on sale at E-bay.I can't wait to add another ATI 3870X2 board on a crossfire system that will give me the power of four GPU's.I have been an Nvidia buyer since I started building computers some 20 years ago, so the move to ATI was somewhat concerning to me. However, with all the problems I have experienced with Nvidia products lately, and the way Nvidia left some of their customers behind waiting for updated drivers to fix issues that never came, I felt now was the time to move on. I picked a GREAT time to move over to ATI, what a great graphics board.I have one thing to say (IMNSHO) to Nvidia in regards to their below standard products and poor customer support.Bye Bye Nvidia

Hi Mike,I'm surprised your screenshot post was removed given its usefulness. I guess it breached forum rules which is a pity because if more people had seen the shots it would have shown that the 3870X2 is the best card available. So, a big thank you for taking the time to post those shots. It was very timely as the latest edition of PC Pro arrived on my doorstep yesterday and they too were highly impressed with the card. Can I ask what size case you have? I was considering the Antec Sonata but have now decided on the Antec Nine Hundred / Ultimate Gamer case to ensure the card will fit. A beefier PSU is also required so I've now chosen a Corsair 620 watt which should suffice.

Hi Ray,My case is an ENERMAX Chakra and my power supply is a Galaxy. The ATI video board is snug but it fits fine.

Thanks. The depth of that case is 49cm and mine is 49.3cm so I should be fine - just. Did you have to shift any drive cages?Looks like a 1000 watt PSU. Crikey! :-eek

Hi Ray,Everything fits fine, I did not have to alter/move anything. That Galaxy power supply is sweet, good money spent on a great product. The only problem, my computer case is so HEAVY. :)

Hey Ray, Hey Mike,I too found your other post incredibly useful, sorry to see it go. A picture is worth a thousand words so 10-20 pictures is like reading a small novel on the x2 ;).I had a few questions based on that thread being that I have dual 8800 GTX right now. If you would be so kind to let me know...1. Do you just uninstall the cards, go through driver cleaner and then re-install the new cards? I have never attempted to go from Nvidia-ATI before so I am a bit unsure as to what is involved.2. What are the temperatures like on these cards compared to the 8800 GTX?3. Is there a DDR4 version coming out that you know of?and finally, do you need a special motherboard to get two of these cards running independently, not in crossfire mode but to power 3 or 4 monitors? I am running an Asus P5N32SLI Plus mobo and want to ensure it can handle two of these for all of my monitors. I will even consider another 24 and moving to four monitors with two cards if this beast can handle it.Thank you SO MUCH for all of your time and all the information, not just on the cards but the checklists too. You just got me off the ground from KEWR-VHHH :)Thank you again,-PaulPS, if the mods are reading please bring the other post back it was so useful... Hi Mike,That's very reassuring. I think I've found a better case - the Antec P182 which is 2cm deeper so should have extra space for that ATI monster! If anyone else is interested here is the review http://www.xsreviews.co.uk/reviews/cases/antec-p182/I imagine that 1000 watt PSU must weigh a bit. Still, sounds like it's worth it. Just get the missus to move it for you when she hoovers ;-)

hi Mike, glad your enjoying your new card. if you don't mind my asking what are the rest of your system specs as well as your OS? thanks in advance for the info. happy flyin, fm

The depth of that case is 49cm and mine is 49.3cm so I should be fine...Ray, take a look at the motherboard you plan on putting in the system as well. Some MB's have the SATA ports in a position that can interfere with the longer video cards.Regards,

thanks for the info. Mike. i'm trying to convince myself that the 3870X2 is enough of an improvement over the X1950XTX to justify an upgrade. happy flyin, fm

I missed the pics but would be very interested to see them, Im sure others would too.Could you post again maybe the screen shot forum?or maybe a link to them somewhere else, www.pbase.com will allow you to open an account for free and post pics.thanks!

Were the pics pulled because they were too big? They were all 1/2mb and bigger, and large res as well. Maybe if Mike reposted them per Avsim's rules????
