Vertical Lines followed by loss of AA

Featured Replies

I am getting this weird artifact stuff in KBFI, Seattle.I got it last time followed by a BSODI tried it again, and no BSOD, but after the weird phenomena appeared, I lost all AA and AF, like it just went away, normally I run 8x AA and 16xAF using nHancer.Anyone ever experienced this?aawacked.jpgaawacked_none.jpg

I got it many times. Yours is not as bad as some I've seen. As stated several times before here, you are running out of memory. Turn down your FSX settings especially the level of detail setting. If it's set at High, move it back to Medium. Plus, I highly recommend you get rid of 16x's AF and 8x's AA and use the FSX AF/AA settings. You'll find a more stable environment. You also appear to be having a lot of programs running in the background. Your browser takes a lot of memory and should be turned off while FSX is on. You'll also get better FPS by running FSX in full screen rather than windowed mode. I know you and many others may dispute some of the things I have just stated, but believe me, they work -- at least in my high end system. I hope this helps resolve your graphics problem.Best regards,Jim

hmmmm Yeah, I only run two programs, BitDefender AV, and that snowflake like icon is for my HP all in one printer, and it's not taking up much at all....maybe 8MBThe other one is my USB addon drive, and of course my volume icon. There's not really much running at all, BD only takes up about 10MB as well. And running FSX in game settings doesn't allow me to get the higher levels of AA, which is why I purchased a better video card in the first place. When I first got the card, I ran back and forth between in game and nHancer, and no difference, except that nHancer yields better image quality. too bad about the RAM, I've only got 2GB so I guess that would explain it. I'll probably hold off on putting 2x512mb sticks in thoughhow much RAM do you have?

Thanks. I was sweating your response. No one likes to be told about how to run their system and sometimes it's hard to provide a tactful response... at least that has been my experience on these forums. lolI 'only' have 4GB of RAM but Vista32 can only use 2560 of it as I have two 8800GTX video cards with 768MB memory (in SLI mode) and that uses most of the rest of the memory addresses in my system. I still get the "spikes" occasionally and/or OOM's if I fly a commercial product like PMDG's 747 with max adverse weather conditions. I once had my browser open in the background once and that caused memory problems too (or at least a CTD). My FSX display settings are not set to max and are set pretty low. Even so, I still get great crisp graphics with high FPS (over 30). I do nothing with my NVIDIA display settings (keep them at default) and use the AA/AF settings within FSX. NVIDIA issued a statement on their site once that using the in-game AA/AF is the best option as the game developers came up with the best AA/AF for the game for the best possible display. I found that to be true on my system as I have cranked up AA/AF in my display settings and it has done nothing to enhance the graphics. If you are getting great graphics using NHancer, then I would continue to use them. I'm just saying 16x's AF takes up a lot of resources and that could be part of your problem with the spikes/memory loss.Best regards,JimMy System Specs:Intel DuoCore2 X6800 Extreme CPU (Factory OC to 3.73GHz); 30" Dell 3007WFP monitor; 4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz; Dual 768MB NVIDIA 8800GTX in SLI mode; Vista32 Premium OS; lKW PSU

Ryan - Had the same issues for quite a while - in my case, it had nothing to do with memory. Changed drivers until I found one that worked. Haven't had a problem since and other than autogen (very dense), water (2 low), traffic (50%) and no light bloom, I run all sliders maxed. Stay at 20fps(max20) except for JFK, LAX, etc where it drops down to 10-11.Vic Q6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.65Evga 680i A1 with P31 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx 174.74 betaKandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg

I agree with you that FSX's AA probably is more stable in-game. I used to run in-game with my old GF 6800XT 256mb PCIe card.OT, I'm listening to Transformers: The Score - and it is fantastic, back on topic,So then when I got my new card, I really liked the fact that I could run high levels of AA, and it works great because 95% of the time I fly in rural areas, or small cities, and it looks awesome, flies smoothly etc. I guess I'll just have to stay out of the busier areas. Or maybe go back to in-game settings.Originally, I only downloaded nHancer to run FS2004 with AA and AF, because it won't work with gf 8xxx cards unless you have nHancer, or so I'm told (and my results too)but then it sorta took over and created profiles for all my games, HL2, Crysis, BF2, WoW etc So then I decided I could work with that. Maybe I'll disable my FSX profile and let FSX in-game work its magic. If the OOM's continue with in-game settings at busier airports I'll go back to nHancer and deal with it :)

hi Vic, I sorta swapped drivers a lot to experiment. Right now I've settled on the Tweaks r us 169.61's How are those 174's?And, I switched back to in-game settings and yeah it looks alright but now my trees are super shimmery again....drives me nuts!I'll see if I can get my PC to BSOD in BFIOk, here's my full res images cropped, I'm sure you can guess which one is in-game AAand note that I was using 16x AA, not 8x my badThe in-game AA almost looks like no AA, and the funny thing is - it appears to be worse with my new card. In-game AA on my old card looked better, but overall IQ with my new card is better when using nHancer....odd!nHancerFSX.jpgEDIT: wait I need new images sorryok, here they are, look at those ugly trees!ingameAA-1.jpgnHancerAA-1.jpg

You probably get a lot of CTD's too. Autogen at very dense? And scenery sliders all set to max? AI at 50%? You're only looking for problems IMHO. IMHO there's no system that can stay up for any length of time with those high settings. Even the developers said no current system could operate long at those high settings especially if you turn on the weather and/or fly a commercial aircraft like LevelD 767 or the PMDG 747. Yes, I have had my settings set to max too, almost exactly the same as yours, but I saw a lot of blurriness from the sim constantly trying to render in high detail, and almost for sure an eventual CTD/OOM. As I mentioned earlier, my graphics are extremely crisp and clear at reduced settings and I can enjoy a complete mission or flight from LAX to SFO without worrying about a CTD. Congratulations though if I'm wrong and you're having no problems. Amazing!Best regards,Jim

Amazing!>>Best regards,>Jim>Hey Jim - I'm one of the lucky ones. I *rarely* get a CTD. FWIW, it seems my system has found a happy medium that it likes. For me, the FPS counter is just to check things, I rely on visuals - if it looks and feels good - that is the important thing. Strangely, the few CTD's or complete freeze tha I've gotten usually relate to a bad driver or a sound file!I don't fly the PMD or LevelD's but the Shockwave P_51, Eaglesoft Twin Comanche and the RealAir Spit w/ 32bit textures put a load on. And I run ASX, FSMap, TrackIR and VoxATC along with it.As it stands now, if I try to kick up the o/c on the CPU or GPU or memory - all #### breaks loose. I think I found the sweet spot for my system.Ryan - I'm using the XG 174's from tweakforce and I love them. Slightly lower 3DMark06 scores but better visuals. Since I lock my FPS at 20 it doesn't seem to make a difference. Also, haven't seen the spikes once with the 174 where I was getting them a lot with the 169's. Especially 169.21 - for me that sucked big time even tho a lot of folks love them.VicQ6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.65Evga 680i A1 with P31 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioned for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx XG 174.74 - 702/1620/792Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comhttp://www.hifisim.com/banners/hifi-supporter-sigbanner.jpg
