Anybody using this card...

My ATI X800 XT AIO AGP card bit the dust. Not quite ready to drop $2500 for a new system but will drop $250 for a replacement card. Looking for best I can get for this old technology. Came across this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814161226hs a $40 buck rebate. Anybody using it? I am using it with an Intel P4 3.4 Ghz single core. I would think maybe I would see some improvement over my 3 year old card? Guess they don't make a 8800GTX in AGP form?

Hi again Clutch, For the money your talkin for the new AGP card, it's possible for nearly the same price to get a new motherboard with PCIE support and a new 8800gt. Would the rest of your rig be compatible with the new MB if you swapped everything over? If so, I would consider that as an option. What's your PSU like for either option - up to snuff power wise?? Really? All that for $250? Most motherboards I look at are at least $200 and a nice dual-core? Shouldn't that run about $200 too these days? Unless you happen to know of some perfect match where all three components fall into the $250 range. ;)

You can add a C2 or quad later, if it strikes your fancy, and if you scrounge around you can find even better deals than what I've linked. Your right, somehow I was thinkin' of motherboard AND the CPU??? Not sure why. I will look more into that. Thanks for the links. Nice alternative. Oooops, both your links go to the motherboard. No prob... I will look up the card as well. ;)

Question: From what you are describing, is your current computer a P-4 Socket 478 and DDR-400 RAM?If so, here's an inexpensive way to go with a nice bump in performance.My wife's gaming machine recently lost the motherboard. She had a P-4 3.2 Socket 478, AGP X850 256 meg & 2 gigs DDR-400.We bought a CHEAP Biostar P4M900-M4, about $60 from Newegg.This board has PCI Express video, and uses DDR2-667 RAM, but still uses the Socket 478 CPU.We also bought 2 gigs of DDR2-667 and she is using my old 8800GTS 320 meg video card (FSX likes more than 320 megs video). Ram was less than $50 and an EVGA 8800GT 512 meg PCIx is currently about $150. So you're looking at about $260 for the step up to DDR2 & PCIx. Plus you're moving past AGP.I was expecting "maybe" a little improvement, but her performance gain, with the same P-4 3.2 Socket 478, in Conan was spectacular. Ray,Yep, got a good ol' Socket 478 CPU. Got 2 gig of DDR-500 too. Be nice if I could still use that but I'm sure that's date too. Some creative ideas out there. Sounds like some pretty good upgrading for only $260. How she run with FS? Will it even run FSX?.

Install a flight sim on her system... LOL, yeah right!!!Actually it was my old system and I did run FSX with the P-4 3.2 and ATI X850 card. It wasn't bad as long as I kept the sliders in the middle. With the newer items, I think it would do OK. Conan is rather demanding, much more so than the World of Warcraft that she was playing with everything maxed out. The new setup sure made Conan come to life. That's all I can really judge by.This setup would be a stop gap till you move to the "latest greatest" that Intel has to offer.Trickle down works great in my house :-)--Ray
