177.79 beta driver seems good so far

Recommended Posts

Just downloaded and installed the new beta 177.79. I have to say so far so good. I'm running 8XQ AA with override app and 16x AF set to biliniar in fsx. I dont notice any added stutter and seems to be a little smoother overall. I say give it a try.

I agree. I rarely install beta drivers but decided to try these as I had heard good things about their performance. They work great for me and seem smoother.Jim

What driver were you using prior to this beta? I'm running 175.19 without any real issues.

Ray,I guess you were asking me. I was also running the 175.19 WHQL drivers but the beta's seem a bit better. Should they give me any problem I'll dump them in a second. This is the first time I've used a beta driver for a long, long time. Does it fix any problems in FSX? No. But I believe I'm getting better performance.Best regards,Jim

Hi Jim,Yes, I did direct my question to you. It's very difficult to subjectively assess new drivers. I tend to use a frame rate test to determine if one set of drivers are better than another.Smoothness is very difficult, if not impossible, to assess with any degree of accuracy. The other issue is OS. Those with Vista claimed 175.19 were a lot better than earlier ones but on my XP system they appeared identical to 175.16.Maybe they're better on your Vista 32 than they would be on my XP system?

Ray,I am running XP Pro 32 and actually see a bit of performance increase. I was using the 175.16 and thought they worked well. I feel the 177.79 is noticeably better in smoothness and a few extra frames as well. I tried the 175.19 and couldnt get rid of the stutters no matter what I tried. I have a very modest system and with all the help on here am able to get 3o FPS or higher in alot of areas even while flying my Super80 by Coolsky. (great great bird) The heavy hitting areas do stop me in my tracks but thankfully there are more areas with great performance than areas that are not.Jim W

Hi Jim,Some numbers (before and after) would tell a fuller story. I have updated my XP drivers several times and have yet to see any significant improvements.I lock my system at 30 and it can achieve that 90% of the time. The other 10% is on approach and taxiing around when things get heavy. If others report fps improvements with 32-bit XP and FSX I may dip my toe.Cheers,

I usually fly with my FPS unlimited so what I have noticed is that in areas where I got 25 FPS or higher (I stay away from the big hitters) I am now seeing a 5 fps average increase. That may not make you want to change your current set up if you already are seeing 30 locked 90% of the time but maybe you would see improvements when on approach or taxi. The overall smoothness is with out a doubt much better IMO. I have a 8600 GT Super Clocked edition with DDR3 256mb Ram.

Hi Jim,The increase is encouraging. :-) Unfortunately all my flying is IFR and that inevitably means flying into large airports such as EGLL.With Aerosoft Mega Heathrow my frame rates remains around 10 on approach and even with these new drivers that may only increase by 1 or 2.I flew from Dublin to Nice, Framce today in FSX and flew back using FS9. The return trip (frame rates locked at 50) made the experience a more convincing one than the outbound.I'm considering staying with FS9 for a while. That was my first flight for a couple of months and FS9 did not feel like a prehistoric relic. And with those frame rates is there any need to change anything when frame rates into the FS9 Aerosoft Heathrow remain in the 30s?Cheers,

Jim W,Thanks for the heads up!I installed the new drivers and made my standard test flight and compared average fps.FSX SP2, DX9 mode, Vista 32.Avg fps with 175.19: 62.6Avg fps with 177.79: 62.4My conclusion is that the performance is equal between these two driver versions.Regarding smoothness I can't notice any difference.Ulf BCore2Duo X6800 3.3GHz4GB RAM Corsair XMS2-8500C5BFG 8800GTX, Creative SB X-FiFSX Acc/SP2, Vista 32

Ulf B, Those are some sweet FPS you are getting! What kind of slider settings do you use and get that kind of performance? Thanks for the test results!Jim W

Jim,Nothing special. The testflight that I use is over semidense rural area, which isn't that demanding. Here is a picture of the landscape:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191216.jpgThe tweaks applied in fsx.cfg are:TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULT=40SmallPartRejectRadius=3TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=2000Poolsize=20000000I use two monitors and the settings are:Mode=1920x1200x32AntiAlias=1TriLinear=1Mode=1280x1024x32AntiAlias=1TriLinear=1I use RivaTuner to OC my 8800GTX card:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191217.jpgThese are my settings in the NVIDIA control panel:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191218.jpgThese are my settings during a testflight (note that aircraft AI set to 0%):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191219.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191220.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191221.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191222.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/191223.jpgAs you can see I lock fps to 27 fps. I only use unlimited when testing new drivers. My settings satisfy my needs when doing VFR flying, but then I usually add 30% AI flights. When flying IFR and commercial ac I use settings with less autogen.Ulf BCore2Duo X6800 3.3GHz4GB RAM Corsair XMS2-8500C5BFG 8800GTX, Creative SB X-FiFSX Acc/SP2, Vista 32

Ulf,Wow! 62 plus FPS! That's almost twice as good as my max FPS with my more powerful system and I have all land and sea traffic turned off (yours is on), no autogen (yours is on), AI set to 40% (yours is off), and all terrain and water settings lower than yours, especially level of detail radius is set to medium). The best I can get is around 38 FPS but it's closer to 30 on average. I don't use tweaks or RivaTuner. You're some tweaker!
