Which DF/Ariane Merge to use?...

Just picked United Airlines from Ariane - the old 5.00 pound one. Need advice from people who have successfully done the merge. How functional is the panel? What's my first step?Thanks, Adam

Adam,Ariane offers a DF/Ariane Merge by Lee Holdridge under their "Freeware Page." This is the merge I've always used, and I've had very good success with it. The only thing that doesn't work 100% on the panel is the VNAV function. With VNAV enabled below 10,000 feet, the aircraft tends to climb like a rocket, even at heavier loads. Once passing 10,000 feet, it still climbs fairly quickly, but quite a bit more realistically. Lee uses the Ariane air.file which in itself is inferior.Best Regards, Uwe

Perhaps you might want to give my own merge a try. everything working ok, incl. VNav and stuff. Autolands also corrected. Also no more climbing like a rocket or pitch-up problems anymore. Only problem that I havn't looked into is the positioning of the views.Credits must go to the one who made the basis for my own file, shame on me I forgot his name! Sorry! I have heard that the Peter Mcleland merge is the best available. Somebody knows where can I find this file?. I have sent some emails to him, but w/o answer.Cheers,Pedro.

Mr.Mcleland's merge is the only way to go. Only way to get it is from him because he has asked for it not to be distributed. If you e-mailed him he will respond in time. Well worth the wait!George

Ariane also notes a new FDE on their site....you might want to take a look at it....Now that the FFX 733 is out, I'll be interested in comparing the two, side by side. Outside shots of the FFX 733 look almost better than the Ariane model, although Ariane still edges out on the wing view detail and accuracy....I'm afraid to say, I've not been flying the heavy metal (don't laugh at the 737, you 747 pilots) as much lately, now that I have the ES Beechjet/Premier. Between those two aircraft, and the Malibu Mirage I'm finishing up for Chuck Dome, I haven't flown an airliner in a long while. But, the Ariane UAL 737 is still my startup aircraft, as it's easy on the fps....

I actually found that using the DF airfiles for the Ariane doesn't work very well. The plane does not fly as well and a lot of Ariane features like the moving flaps etc. do not work. It is better to use the Ariane cfg adapted to the DF panel, despite some flaws. Ariane is working on some new improved airfiles which will be integrated into a new merge version. Hopefully, there will be continuing improvement in the FDE of both the 300 and the 400.However, we all have to face FS2004 soon, so all bets are off.Lee Holdridge

Long ago I made some of my own tweaks to Ariane's FDE. With minimal changing, it became the best jet I fly compared to what I understand the real numbers are. I haven't tried the new air files, and I doubt I will--but perhaps they'll offer an improvement to those who expect the seller to do the tinkering (and that's fair to expect)....O/T--I really wonder how a real commercial pilot would evaluate a flight model like that for a 737, or a 757, '320, etc.... I don't see much info discussed on roll rates, adverse yaw, MOI effects (how much stick force does it take to subdue roll, or changes in pitch). I know there's a lot of discussion about the numbers, but what about "feel"? What is the best freeware FDE--for any jet aircraft--that duplicates the "feel" of flying one of these jets?The other day an ultralight pilot emailed me regarding something he wanted me to duplicate in my microlight... He said that pusher props on ultralights will often cause a downward pitch when thrust is applied. So, I changed my engine location, placing it a tad above and behind the COG as it would be in a real ultralight, and sure enough, FS modelled the movement he had predicted.I think with a lot of real pilot input, we could go a long way towards having better FDE's, even given the existing flight dynamics modelling in FS...

With it up front AND above the CG where is belongs on a GA aircraft (many of the models leave it on the cg in the vertical plane) you will notice that after you have the trim set correctly, if you suddenly reduce power back to idle the nose will pitch up and you will need to apply nose down trim. Makes complete sense if you look at a free body diagram of the aircraft in stable flight.Point being --- it you don't want to trim for power level changes, put the engine on the vertical cg centerline.Regards,Bob
