Old drives new mobo

Recommended Posts

G'day,I'm hoping to move the drives from my old computer to a newer one sporting a dual core cpu and a new Radeon gpu.Am I looking at a great new experience or a world of pain? The drives were formatted and used with an older ASUS P5WD2-E Premium mobo and a Radeon X1600 and Pentium D 3.00GHz. The newer stuff is an ASUS P5K-E mobo, a dual core E6600 Intel cpu and a Radeon 4850.Any advice is very welcome!Cheers,Tony

I've found transplanting a hard drive can be easy, or can be a crap shoot depending on how much under the hood needs to change. The cleanest way I know is to start an upgrade install of XP, then when it's prepped the drive and is ready to reboot the system, power off when you see the bios screen, isntall the new hard drive, then let it come up and finish the install with the new hardware. Sometimes it's happy, sometimes it's not.Good luck.
