Search ZIP File Utility?

Recommended Posts

Like many of you my download directory is loaded with tons of zip files. I don't always have the time to unzip and install them in FS2K2, so I just leave them until later. Today I decided it would be nice to fly around Hawaii and I remembered that about 2 weeks ago I downloaded some Hawaii scenery. I did a search for "Hawaii" but nothing was found! Apparently it is not possible to search for files that are contained within zip files. Does anyone know of a utility that will search for a file within a zip file and tell you what zip file contains the file of interest? Thanks!Airbus

Don't know of a utility for that but you could come back to AVSIM and search the library here. Get the file name(s) and then go look in your folder for it. That's how I do it.BobL

Hi, we use a search tool at work that would fit your needs, it is a shareware program, though. The best I have seen so far to scan your machine

I have taken to saving zip files to a seperate folder under c:Zipped. I name the folder with a descriptive title so I'll know what's in it. Used to have the same problem. You can also set WinZip to "Classic" and it shows what files are contained and you can click on them and they'll open in notepad. That is any text files such as readme.txt or file_id.diz

I know the feeling. I got them scattered on five different computers on my LAN system. Time for a little library cataloging I guess!:-lol

Windows XP will do it. Kinda expensive for a utility though if you are not already using it. XP treats zip files as compressed folders. You can then search on file name (full or partial) or text in a file contained in the zip file.

I have XP but the search feature doesn't appear to allow a search WITHIN a ZIP file itself. Maybe I am missing something. Please let me have more details on how it is done. Thanks for your help!Airbus
