Question about the Dash8 ADI (Speed control indicator)

Recommended Posts

Guest Olivier

Hi,I have a question about the Speed Control Indicator. It is supposed to show if we are under or above VREF.Now, how is this VREF set ? Is it automatically calculated ?First, I thought is was the speed indicated by the speedbug on the Airspeed indicator, that we can set, but it is not.One other question : is this VREF the minimum speed without any flaps ??ThanksOlivier

The Speed Control Indicator shows 1.3 x Vs (Vref). Vref is your final approach speed. We use Vref as a target for what speed to cross the threshold at. It is automtically calculated by the lift computer and displayed on the speed control indicator.Hope this helps,Ray

Not claiming to know more about cockpit design than DeHavilland, but I would have thought it would make good "air sense" for the lift computer to also display Vref as an actual airspeed. I never really liked the Speed Control Indicator since if it is pegged at the end of the scale the PF has no immediate way of knowing exactly how much of an airspeed change is required to center it.Purely my own opinion and not a critisism of PSS... after all, so far as I know, they didn't design the real aircraft!Chris Kirk
