high speed climbing

Recommended Posts

Hi,When in the cruise at FL350 in my virgin A340 300, i input a higher altitude and push the op climb button to climb ( managed mode). The problem comes when the speed decreases and the plane rockets up like a,well, rocket! needless to say passengers are thrown from there seats and the complaints come thick and fast. Why does the speed drop off when the op-climb button is pushed and return when the step altitude is reached, and why does the aircraft climb like a fighter on re-heat. The ZFW and fuel are all correctly calculated in inputed into the system, and i usually use a CI of 35-45. if anyone can help it would be much appreciated,Paul

Hi Paul,When you push the ALT selection knob to engage CLIMB, the system will use the current managed speed target, and this is where the problem occurs. In the real thing, the managed speed target becomes ECON CRZ MACH when you reach your cruise FL, and will stay there until you begin your descent for landing, regardless of whether you're in ALT, ALT CRZ, CLIMB or some other vertical mode. But in the PSS version, the managed speed target goes back to ECON CLB SPD/MACH when you engage CLIMB (or OPEN CLIMB, for that matter). ECON CLB MACH is usually lower than ECON CRZ MACH ...The most convenient solution I know of is to use selected speed during the step climb. :) Best,/Bj
