Problem with the a3xx and altitude on autopilot

I was recently looking at real a340 pictures and noticed that, when in flight, at cruise altitude, the lights on the autopilot altitude button are illuminated. I have also noticed that on all the pss airbus panels, the button does not illuminate. What is going on??
