A340 pitch too high-using Bob Scott's FDE

Hello Bob,I know there was thread about this a while ago and looks like, after doing several flights with the PSS A340-300 and -200 and making sure I re-do the load from load editor and ensuring fuel and loads are balanced, weights are below maximums, I too have that problem with the nose-up pitch being too high.During cruise, even with auto-pilot altitude, speed and FMC flight plan activated, my nose is about 5 degrees up and the plane does look quite "steep" from a side view. At landing, I have to struggle to bring the nose down from about 10 degrees nose up pitch. I enter the ZFW and block fuel in the the FMC by the way.Any suggestions? Do you need more info (e.g. my aircraft.cfg file perhaps?)John

Nearly all of the people I've helped with this problem have had some unhappy combination of my .air file with the PSS config file, or vice versa.If you install any new livery using the PSS installer, the installer will overwrite *all* the .air and aircraft.cfg files for that variant of aircraft. In other words, if you install a new A340 livery for the A340-200, the installer will overwrite the .air and/or .cfg files for both the A340-200 amd A340-300. Seems like every time PSS have their spring "fire sale" there is a rash of folks that install new liveries and don't realize they are overwriting their configs by running the PSS installer.My advice is to reinstall my *.air and aircraft.cfg files and re-build the "aircraft.x" sections of the aircraft.cfg file based on all the new installed liveries, as per the instructions in the download archive.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300

Hello Bob,I am only answering your last post now because I had not tried the A340 with your suggestions until recently. I did copy and paste over the entire section below the last livery in the AIRCRAFT.CFG and re-copied your .AIR file over the existing one but the nose-up pitch remains.I am actually confused about something regarding LOADING of the aircraft. What do I use to load it - the PSS loader (which is what I use for the A330 with no problems) or the default FS2004 loader? If I use your FDE, do you have a 2-class or a 3-class configuration? It looks like there was a comment in the load section of your aircraft.cfg which refers to a 2-class CFG which I had missed earlier. But when I loaded the aircraft as a 3-class CFG using the FS2004 load editor, it took it, flew fine but the nose was still very hard to bring down during the approach.If I use the PSS load editor, just to double-check, which class should have the higher overall ZFW - the 2-class or the 3-class? John

If you're seeing comments about a 2-class load config, something is amiss, as both of my version 1.2J config files are 3-class. Might be worth downloading the files from my site again. Better do it soon, as I will be shutting down my site in about a week, and won't have another for at least several months.I don't know which load editors will work or not work...but as long as the station_load centroids remain at 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 then it should be OK (provided the aircraft operating weight remains within limits).RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300

Hi Bob,Thanks again for your informative reply as always!I think I was a little confused about the PSS load editor. When I setup a 2-class load configuration, then all the 3-class loads were zeroed and vice-versa. So I think this must be because it is the same AIRCRAFT.CFG being updated and only one class configuration works. Your aircraft.cfg has places for 3-class configuration so no problems there. I just re-did the loads for 3-class using the PSS load editor and will stick with that from now on.I'll try a flight next week the the A340 and let you know.John

One other thought...all my A330 configs are two-class, and all the A340s are three-class load configs. Seems quite possible to me that you are using one of the A330 aircraft.cfg files with the A340 .air file. That would be a bad thing...Make sure when you unzip the archive that you have the "use full path" option or equivalent turned on. There are four aircraft.cfg files in the archive, each of which belongs in a different directory. If you don't have the full path option, only one of the four different aircraft.cfg files will be present in the directory to which you unzipped the archive.RegardsBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300

Hi Bob,I am confused here - are you saying that there are two aircraft.cfg for A342 and 2 more for A343 plus the air files? I cannot verify my FDE's now as I'm at work. The description on the top of the aircraft.cfg clearly mentioned A340 if I recall...John

Hi again,I just verified your original files from your website and I understand what you mean now - four files including the A330 FDEs. I always unzip to a temporary folder and then drag and drop the files manually into the appropriate FS2004 folder so no danger of using the wrong files.But you have a note beside the first two stations in you A342 aircraft.cfg - LEAVE - what does it mean?pss_num_class = THREE_CLASS // Load Editor Cfg Valuestation_load.0 = 450, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 //Weight Crew (lbs) LEAVEstation_load.1 = 3000, 0.0, 0.0, 0.0 //Weight Galleys (lbs) LEAVEJohn

Those were comments which appeared in the original PSS config files...at the time I wrote the FDE I wanted to try and preserve compatibility with the PSS loader, and I didn't know if those comments were used by the load editor in its parse of the weight_and_balance section. So I put the pss_num_class parameter and those extraneous comments in "just in case." I still have no idea if their presence makes any difference...I modify station loads directly in the aircraft.cfg rather than using the load editor.CheersBob ScottATP IMEL Gulfstream II-III-IV-V L-300

My problem is, that I have to reduce the Speed (A330/A340) to 120 kts or less to bring the nose up in final !!!

I just did a flight today with the A343 and literally stalled and crashed just before touchdown! I NEVER stall, let alone crash upon landing. The nose was about 10-12 degrees UP! I restored the default loads from Bob's original aircraft.cfg file for the A343 with the default ZFW of 350,000 and did a test flight - the problem was resolved. Nose was about 3-5 degrees up on the flare.But this brings up another question: Bob, have you tried increasing the weights for the station loads? (Using FS2004's loader actually should be the same as editing the aircraft.cfg file directly as you do). I noticed that in the PSS load editor, as you INCREASE the slider to the right to increase weight for the PASSANGERS (i.e. business class, first class, economy class), the graphic colour filles the cabin from FRONT TO BACK. Does this mean that the load editor loads passangers from front to back so that, at a partial passanger load (e.g. Bob's default 350,000 lbs ZFW), the plane is MORE FRONT HEAVY (assuming same cargo and baggage load) and as you increase the number of passangers using PSS load editor, the PLANE'S WEIGHT SHIFTS BACKWARDS?This may explain why using the load editor: (1) does NOT load crew and galleys, causing less weight (I assume) in the FRONT and hence more weight on the BACK of the aircraft - which would cause the nose to go up due to excessive rear weight and (2) causes more and more IMBALANCE TOWARDS THE REAR of the aircraft as one increases the passanger load.Can anyone comment on the above please? This is important to know as loading is crucial to a properly flying A340.Thanks,John
