Recommended Posts

I have Win XP home,on a new Dell. Where do I look to see what version of Direct X.. I'm running. I have the latest drivers for my ATI Radeon 9700 TX and wonder if I need to update to DX9 ?

At the present time, I see no compelling reason to upgrade to DX9, especially as far as FS2002 is concerned. I learned a long time ago that upgrading DX before applications are released that support the updated version often caused more harm, and never did any good.-Basil

Not sure if it's the same on XP but for Windows 98 and below you go to your start / run and then type in DXDIAG. This will show you what version of DirectX you are running. Click on the second tab called "DirectX Files" All should say "Final Retail" after the version number which is listed like 0900 if you are running DX9. If you have not yet upgraded to DX 9 than I would recommend that you do. Especially since your 9700 Pro is optimized to take advantage of the DX9 code.

Prove it to me if I'm wrong, but I say this isn't going to translate into anything concrete until applications are written to take advantage of DX9.-Basil

Nope, you're right Basil. No gain to be had at all with the stuff we're running now. DX9 doesn't equate to DXMAgic no matter what card is being used.Doug
