ils procedure at Reggio LICR

Recommended Posts

Guest ktaliana

Does anyone please know if one can enter a landing procedure as it seems that the tight ILS at rwy33 at Reggio Calabria (teh one with a left turn on final) does not show correctly. Thanks Kenneth

LICR runway 33 is a really nice circle to land approach with the runway offset. So a bit challenging. You can only use the ILS up to the middle marker (see the charts availabe from VATITA.net) and then need to curve in to the runway on visual. It is almost a year since I flew to LICR so I will do so again but I don't recall entering anything extra into the MCDU other than going to manual and visual from the MM. You've whet my apetite so I'll test it again this weekend and let you know whether there is a procedure you should enter to make the approach easier. But you should forget an autoland!Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

The charts for runway 33 clearly show that after the middle marker (MM) the approach is visual and that the localiser indications should be ignored after MM. There is nothing you can enter into the MCDU aftert he MM apart from, I suppose, a series of PBD fixes but that would be clunky for this phase of the flight and I wouldn't recommend it. Best to do as in the real world and go visual. I flew it this morning from LIRF and it was a nice approach apart from being slightly too high in the curve-in which was irritating having followed the alt constraints in the charts up to that point. It resulted in a hard landing and showed I need to practice this approach a bit more.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

I tried it yesterday; as expected, the approach MCDU built to the RW 33 had nothing in common with the one in the chart, with the turn right before the runway. MCDU put CF25 straight before the runway at much larger distance, so the plane had sufficient time to align. When I removed the points MCDU put in the plan and instead inserted the points according to the chart, then Airbus did not control the airspeed and altitude, I had to do it manually; the only thing it helped with was making the final turn before the runway. But the space there (1 mile or so?) is too tight for anything with inertia more than of a bicycle; by switching a/p off, it was not too hard to land the aircraft, but it was not safe either. I'd think that approach is for much smaller planes.

thanks for trying it but Airmalta uses A320's and A319's in weekly service to Reggio.

Yes, it's no harder than the old IGS approach into Kai Tak which airlines did every day. Or how about runway 09 at Samos (LGSM), ugh!! that's always an awful right turn on short finals and very difficult to get right.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

No, STARS do not take you to the threshold and as the previous posts have made clear, this is an ILS approach only up to the MM after which it is visual. So although we should all be getting up to date navdata from navdata.at on this occasion it won't help with the original question about entering a procedure into the MCDU.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

Yep, this is a "Hand on the stick" approach if ever I saw one. Will have to try it out someday soon...
