RED TAPES AT 350 Kts!!

Recommended Posts

hi there, i have been flying PSS for a time now (777) and just purchased the pro airbus. My problem is when i get up to cruise altitude there are 'red tapes' at about 350 knots and of course the autothrottle will not go any other speed higher than that ( i want to cruise at about 0.80mach) Help please how do i get rid of the tapes!!!many thanks

You don't - and don't need to! At Cruise level IAS indications are unreliable and therefore pretty pointless. If you change your speed display to Mach indications you'll probably find you're round about Mach .82. If you also keep an eye on your ground speed that'll tell you you're going much faster than you seem to think you are!!

thanks for the quick reply i am sorry but i dont agree with that because it indicates .531mach and the nose is pitched up at nearly 10degree angle at 32000ftthanks again

Are you still climbing at that point? If so, reduce the rate of climb as over about FL250 if you maintain the same rate of climb the speed will drop off noticeably until you risk a stall. If you are flying straight and level and are still pitched up at 10 degrees then there is a problem. In this case send me by email your aircraft.cfg and .air file to look and, if necessary, adjust and return.Timvee is correct, the max operating speed (Vmo) is 350kts IAS which is set in the air file and corresponds to real life. Above FL290 (in Europe)you only consider mach. So you will always get the red bars from 350kts up. So only look at the mach reading and adjust that as necessary on the glareshield. Most airline SOPS will have a cruise at 0.78.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

Do you mean the aircraft.cfg or the .air file? They are not the same thing. The aircraft.cfg is just a text file so will open with notepad. The air file requires a specialist program like AirEd to open it. I suspect you are trying to open the air file and I advise against it unless you are prepared to accept major problems as a result. It is not intuitive, many settings are unknown outside of Microsoft and you can wreak havok with your aircraft setup if you get any parameters wrong. What are you trying to change in your aircraft.cfg or air file? If it is the 350kt Vmo setting that would be unrealistic and is not the cause of the problem you highlighted earlier. By the way, could you put your name on posts, it helps us to know who we are corresponding with. Just had a thought, and Rob will bear me out on this one I'm sure! I noticed you've switched from Boeing to Airbus,is this recent because sometimes it can be a bit of a confusing change? They do the same things but in different ways. The panels are different, the r/w controls are different and you have to learn the different sorts of processes which for me took some time. Just remembering you're not flying a boeing and there is a difference often helps.Tim

thanks for the idea, and i have a range of aircraft and have been flying them for many years.I have just done another few flights (egkk-lfbo) and same problem at 32000ft the red bars are still there at 350knots, and the mach reading is about 0.55-0.60 and therefore the nose is at about 5-10degree angle. however if i disengage the autothrottle and manually get to about 0.80 the nose is at the normal level, about 2degrees pitch up... all i need to be able do to is but the autothrottle to 0.80mach. is there something in the pre-flight MCDU programming or something else i need to do. I am pretty sure the aircraft Configs are fine. Thanks again,,Alex Ridge

Ok just to reiterate, the red bars will always be there at 350kts. Nothing you can do about that and it conforms to the real world Airbus. Some more quuestions I'm afraid:- Is this the A319, A320 or A321? And are you using the correct aircraft.cfg and air fifle for that type?- What flight level have you put in to the first INIT page? -What is your ZFW and block fuel? It seems to me that it might be that you are too heavy and the aircraft is struggling to reach your planned flight level, maintains pitch up but the speed then drops back. - Are you in managed speed (in other words you have pushed/left-clicked the speed knob which will then put ---. in the speed window on the glareshield)? - And finally are you in managed vertical speed mode? If so, try pulling/right-clicking the V/S knob on the far right of the glareshield to go to selected mode and reduce your climb rate to say, 500fpm and see what happens.Let me know if you are in straight and level cruise or in the climb when this happens as it does affect the solution to the problem. It could be an A/T problem but I doubt it as these are very rare. If you can answer the questions above we'll eventually get you sorted out. Right starting from the top list of questionswell it can be either, i have used all of them EVEn including a340 pssWell this can change depending how far the flight is, lets just say 32000ftZFW for my mast flight was 158.2 in the A321I have experimented with the managed speed, everything there is ok yes. Also managed the Vertical speed mode yes.i understand that the Aircraft may be struggling in the climb but no this is in level out cruise 32000ft.i also do not think it is a A/T problem,I may of said this but i do not want to cruise at 0.60. Every aircraft that i have used, i cruise between 0.80-0.85 no problem. its just the airbus aircraft, the red bar line is at 0.55-0.60 about.hope that is to help, many many thanks for the interest, the help, the support and effort you have put into this. It is much appricated!! :D :-)many thanks Alex

>well it can be either, i have used all of them EVEn including>a340 pssYes but it was what you were flying when this happened. I assume from your response that it happens on ALL flights with the PSS Airbus.>Well this can change depending how far the flight is, lets>just say 32000ftYes of course it changes with each flight, I was trying to isolate whether you were inputting incorrect data into the MCDU. What did you enter into LSK6L (bottom left) of the INIT page on the MCDU when this happpened on your last flight?>ZFW for my mast flight was 158.2 in the A321And what was your block fuel? Were you by any chance flying with full fuel tanks? Did you enter the correct weights and fuel into the FS Aircraft ->Fuel and Payload menu option? As the aircraft in managed mode should cruise at 0.78 unless you change that manually or through the PERF->CRZ page.If it's happening with all PSS aircraft I get the feeling that you must be entering something not quite correctly, possibly related to weights and fuel. Of course I could be well wide of the mark. A walk-through of what you are entering into the MCDU would be useful. Sorry it's so many questions.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

crazy thought here ...maybe there has been an accidental change in FS9's settings and the the speedtape is showing real airspeed instead of indicated?those folks with the correct tables ... at FL320 at 350kts actual airspeed what would mach speed be? around .5??--

i dont know maybe D Scobie is right, but yes this is not a one off flight this is happened it is every single PSS Airbus flight, i may not be entering something in correctly, or the flight sim 2004 may be at fault.once again many thanks to everybody who has shown interest in the matter.best regards Alex

Alex you can check this by going to the main FS9 settings page and under Realism make sure that Diplay Indicated Air Speed is checked. But the speed tape is still acting properly so my hunch is still based around incorrect weights oand/or MCDU entries. So any response to the points I have raised above will be grategully received.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk
