Takeoff problem

Recommended Posts

I have a 2 questions regarding takeoff1) Where is the autobrake control?2) My aircraft does not lift off at Vr. I have checked that the aircraft is not overweight, the takeoff configuration seems to be OK, and I cannot figure out what's wrong. Thrust is set from 50% to FLX mode. The aircraft just keeps rolling to high speeds, and wouldn't even take off at 220 knots. It's a bit fustrating - anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance-Todd

todd:which airbus? (319, 320, 321, 330 or 340)some general answers -*before loading the airbus ALWAYS first start FS using a default aircraft (FS9s cessna, 737, 747, 777, whatever); then load the airbus. this is important!!*confirm your joystick is configured correctly. this can be seen on the airbus PFD. (see A32X manual p. 20; A330/340 manual p.8)*w/the A32X go into your PSS ABPro folder Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9AircraftPSSAB-Propanel and in the window 08 change the size_mm= from 1,1 to 2,2 (this is for mouse flicker).*autobrake controls on all A32X and A330/340 aircraft are in the same location - to the right of the E/WD, just above the landing gear lever and below the gear indicator lights.*you must program the MCDU (aka FMC) for aircraft weight (see A32X manual pgs. 61-63; A330/340 manual pgs. 45&46)*confirm you have set takeoff trim correctly - SD display, press FCTL on the ECAM panel. good number is -1.8UP.--

As well as those points mentioned by Scoob, make sure you are using the numpad + and - key for thrust and not the throttle on your joystick.Autothrust is shown on the image below: max (ringed in yellow) is only used for takeoff, low or med or none at all (ringed in blue)) for landing.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164550.jpgFor the weights, make sure the FS9 fuel and payload area agrees with what you put into the MCDU INIT page 2. In the A340 example below the Zero Fuel Weight (ZFW) is (in my case in metric tonnes) 129.3+16.8=146.1 and the block fuel is 40.0:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164551.jpgThis goes into the MCDU on the second INIT page (go to INIT page then press Next Page key):http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/164552.jpgApologies if that is telling you something you already know.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

Wow, thanks Rob and Scoob for your detailed answers.- What's the reasoning behind loading default aircraft before loading the PSS?- I think the problem is the trim, as I think I'm doing everything else correct. Will the MCDU give me the trim amount?

The reason that we at PSS and many other developers so strongly recommend loading a default MS aircraft first with avionics on but engines off and saved as the default flight is to do with the "state variables" loaded with the default aircraft. If you load up the PSS Airbus first these variables are not loaded so various problems (often electrical) can occur. Don't ask me what these variables are as I haven't a clue.No the MCDU will not give you the trim. As scoob said a setting of -1.8UP is good but it's worth experimenting. The figure you are aiming for will enable you to rotate and then hold V2+10 quite easily without shooting through it to a faster speed (which will cause a sharp nose pitch up when you activate the autopilot). You don't want it to be too much or you risk an IAS dropoff on climbout. To re-iterate where you find the trim setting: call up the full IFR panel (shift+2 on the A320 family), press the F/CTRL key and in the centre of the lower ECAM is the pitch trim reading: use the home and end keys to adjust the trim.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

I see...But why isn't the trim listed on any checklist? I was following the 'official' PSS tutorial from their website, and it doesn't mention it anywhere.

It possibly not mentoned because might not even be needed. I set it because, particularly at light weights, it helps me to prevent the aircraft shooting through V2+10. By the way a similar issue arose with another pilot today and it transpired he wasn't using a joystick but only a keyboard, and the Airbus can't be flown using just a keyboard. So I hope you are using a joystick.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

If I didn't set it manually, the trim was actually at 0 (I'm going to guess that's bad). But yeah, without the trim, the nose didn't even lift off a little bit.I'm used to flying the Boeing models, and who knew that the two manufacturers would have such different avionics and controls.
