Autolanding A340

Recommended Posts

Guest johnnyh

Hello. When I am going to do an autoland on the A340, everything goes smoothly until at 100ft. Then, the G/S flag moves down and the aircraft pitches down and at 50 it flares but doesn't have enough time so it hits the ground harshly. I am using Bob Scott's FDE files and everything goes 100% smooth until at 100 ft. I think this maybe because im am going to fast. I land with Flaps 3 (i put that in the approach page). When I am at flaps three I have the speed in managed mode. Should I slow 5 or maybe 10 knots below the speed the aircraft goes to in managed mode? Please help, this is a great aircraft and I really want to be able to autoland. John

Well you see, I am using Bob Scott's files but I edited the lift_scalar so it is 0.8. So when I am at full flaps, the nose pitches down really much but when I am at flaps three the plane is straight while descending. When the the lift_scalar is 0.001 or however it was, the plane had to do a 10 degree pitch when holding an altitude below 10,000 feet so I changed it to 0.8. Did this only make the autolanding worse? I just couldn't have it at 0.001 because the nose pitched up to high. Is there any solution to this, please help me if you can.John

Flaps 1,2,3 and 4 with managed speed, it won't pitch up 10 degrees when I have zero flaps and at 250 kts but then I won't have time to slow down when I land. When I capture the LOC I set flaps to two, then when I capture the G/S I set flaps to 3 and land that way (harsh landing), should I be doing it some different way?John

john:the Abus will control the speed in managed mode, but you must extend the flaps at the proper times.review pages 11 & 12 of the systems manual so you understand what the speedtape symbols represent (these are instructing you to extend flaps at the proper times/speeds).in the charts and tables manual the max speeds for extraction are shown on page 30; a good outline of the speed settings is also on page 28 (A340 CHECK LIST, specific checklists: approach, final, and landing).at cruise and approach some nose up attitude is normal for all airbus aircraft in the real world (and yes, for takeoff and climb ;-)). the PSS air flies were not the best at representing real world. robert scott's are much much better at 'real world' within the limits of FS9.--

You mentioned you changed the lift_scalar away from the Bob Scott figure but you only seem to have changed the flaps.0 lift_scalar. Have you done done any testing on the flaps.1 lift_scalar? I am surprised you have found the nose is too high as I have not had that issue with his FDE which was, part, designed to correct that. As Scoob hinted earlier, it could be to do with the speeds at which you are setting the different flaps configs.Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk

I think it may be because I am putting the wrong information into the MCDU. When you type in the block and ZFW, are you supposed to enter them in Kilos or lbs???

As a result, I always switch off the A/P at 1000ft, follow the magentas before 400ft, then visually landed my craft, this is also the real pilots' procedures

For kilos you need to have "metric (altimeter in feet)" as the units of measure. For lbs it should be "US System".Rob Elliott, EGPE InvernessPSS Airbus Support andAirbus Fleet Training Captain, British Airways Virtual airbus@speedbirdonline.co.ukhttp://www.speedbirdonline.co.uk/airbus.htmlhttp://www.bavirtual.co.uk
