Longest range with PSS Wordliner?

Recommended Posts

Guest vilius1

Dear All,It would be interesting to know what was the longest range successfully flown by you with PSS model of 200LR? Is it really able to go 9420 nautical miles as the real thing? Also, any insights into the definition of max range? Perhaps max range is calculated for calm air (no headwinds, no tailwinds)? Any headwind effectively reduces ground speed and max range. So logically thinking, establishing a regular service between two distant airports requires to evaluate max range, adjusted for maximum possible headwind? BTW, Boeing announced today that they are going for a new world record with 200LR: http://www.boeing.com/news/releases/2005/q4/nr_051108h.htmlThey are going to fly 11,000 nautical miles.Again, I wonder how it may be possible.Either they are allowed to stuff extra fuel tanks into cargo or passenger areas (but then it is no longer standard configuration!) or they plan to take advantage of strong tailwinds? Are such records flown in standard or special configuration?Cheers,Vilius

If it works like the Qantas 747 flight from Heathrow to Sydney, it involves heavy fuel, being towed to the runway for start up and no passengers!RegardsMervyn

Are such records flown in standard or special>configuration?Tail winds were certainly a factor in choosing this route, which was delayed from earlier in the year purely because winds are stronger towards the end of the year. As for special configurations, theres nothing special about the aircraft doing the record today other than there will only be 35 people on board. Also the 777-200LR doing this flight doesn't have any auxiliary tanks, so this isn't a 9420nm 772LR, but an 8800nm 772LR.Also when it arrives at Heathrow, there has to be sufficient fuel remaining on board to allow 45 minutes in a hold, and then beyond that 1 hour 15 minutes for flight to an alternate, so 11,000nm is barely stretching it's legs, shows just how capable the 777 frame is.The Seattle PI have got some good information online about the flight http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/boeing/

Vilius,I did a westbound flight (44kts static headwind) from YSSY to EGLL in real time. With full fuel on board at 390 ZFW, the plane ran out of fuel about 430nm from UK. Total flight time after zero fuel was 20 hrs and 54 min.If this is going to a be regular route, they have to consider fuel weight, passenger load and a respectable headwind.Kin M.(KLAX)

Norman - WOW!!That was impressive account, like one of those articles by Andrew Herd! :-)Did you use any real weather program, like FSMeteo - to generate realistic winds? And did you climb to FL410 right away or gradually step-climbed, always being at optimal flight level (which I suppose must be suggested by FMC)?And also, is there any good place on the web to get on-line flying education? :-)Vilius

Hehe, so what did you do - diverted or crashed? :-)

I landed with less than 8100KG (flightkeeper punished me for low fuel). Flown online, active sky 5 enhanced.

Norman, What's the flight planner you're using here? Would you recommend it?I might start a thread about this actually!
