Cabin pressure and outflow valves

On a recent flight at FL420 (I was very light) I had problems with cabin pressure getting above 8500 with the Outflow Valves on the default AUTO.Switching to MANUAL I couldn't manage to control the cabin pressure. A slight flick of the switches sent the pressure up/down very quickly (-2500ft/min) and I could not get it to stabilise at 8000-8500 manually.Each time the cabin pressure warning sounded I ended up up switching to MANual, flick the open/close switch, wait a few seconds until the pressure got below 8000, switch it back to AUTO and wait for the alarm to sound again when it got back above 8500, and then go thru the process again.I'm not sure if the switches are meant to be this sensitive and wondered if I was doing something wrong. Any ideas anyone?Matt
